A traffic jam adviser helps the waiting motorists on her BMW motorcycle.

The ADAC employee reveals her best advice.

Munich – Bavaria was the last federal state to start the long holidays yesterday.

And as soon as school was over, the traffic reports got longer and longer (see box).

When everything is in place, Tanja Langer from Munich really gets going.

As an ADAC traffic jam consultant, the 54-year-old travels the traffic jams on her motorbike and helps when things don't seem to work anymore.

And that for 28 years.

What she noticed: Tourist traffic has changed a lot.

"The classic traffic jam, in which a kilometer-long tin convoy waits to continue its journey, is now rather rare," says the expert when it comes to standstills.

Stop-and-go traffic jams between Munich and Salzburg

Just last weekend, Tanja Langer was on the A 8 between Brunnthal and Irschenberg.

"Traffic moved slowly in both directions on four lanes each," she says.

Also between Munich and Salzburg: stop-and-go.

That is typical for the current travel season.

Instead of a summer trip lasting several weeks, people would take several short vacations or day trips.

Heading south at a snail's pace

According to the ADAC, the Friday before the first holiday weekend is often the busiest day of the year.

Shortly after the end of school yesterday, after an accident near Rohrdorf, there was the first traffic jam on the A 8, which reached as far as Irschenberg.

That's how it went on in the afternoon, when at times it only went hesitantly from Irschenberg to Chiemsee and there was also a traffic jam at the border near Salzburg.

It all began on the other side of the border at the Salzburg motorway junction.

In the north, there was “stop-and-go” on the A 99, the A 9 and the A 3 because of returnees.

In addition, the dynamic speed limits on the Autobahn ensure that traffic flows more evenly.

And something else has changed, reports Langer: "People don't have time anymore, they start on Friday right after school, children and suitcases are packed into the car.

Then there are no breaks, everyone wants to get to their destination as quickly as possible.

I have the feeling that people used to look forward to their holidays more.”

Traffic jam adviser faster than Google Maps, Radio & Co.

Nevertheless, even if everyone has a cell phone and can use the navigation software to search for traffic jams and alternative routes, traffic jam advisors are still in demand - and sometimes faster than Google Maps & Co. "There was an accident at Lake Chiemsee at the weekend," says Tanja Langer .

"While the radio was still saying that the scene of the accident was closed, I knew from my colleagues that it had been cleared and traffic was moving on." She was able to say that to the drivers, who were already toying with the idea of taking an alternative route.

Via her helmet radio she is constantly in contact with the ADAC traffic jam pilots who monitor what is happening from the air.

Traffic jam adviser helps on the roads in her free time

The 54-year-old works full-time at the ADAC headquarters in Munich, brokering insurance there.

In her free time, during the big travel waves, she drives the autobahns on her BMW motorcycle.

"How long will it take?" "Do you have to wait at the border?" "Is there an alternative route for the traffic jam?" These are the standard questions for the traffic jam advisor.

"I usually give the advice to stay on the freeway, since it's usually not faster on the alternative routes," she says.

One thing hasn't changed despite modern technology, mobile phone games and mini-TVs in the headrests of the cars: the children are very happy when they get teddy bears, coloring books and crayons from the traffic jam advisors when nothing is going on.

"It's always a nice experience," says Langer.

"Then you'll know why you're spending the weekend in a combination suit on a motorbike instead of lying by the lake."
