Y·PARK [Lin·District], a garden waste recycling center in Zeng Tsui, Tuen Mun, has been in operation for more than a year, but was temporarily closed due to the severe epidemic. According to the Environmental Protection Department, the park handled about 30 tonnes of garden waste every day in the first year.

Y·PARK [Lin·District], a garden waste recycling center in Zeng Tsui, Tuen Mun, has been in operation for more than a year, but was temporarily closed due to the severe epidemic.

According to the Environmental Protection Department, the park will treat about 30 tonnes of garden waste every day in the first year, and it is expected to gradually increase to about 60 tonnes a day in the future, so as to produce more wood panels to meet external demand, and at the same time "make a bigger cake". Let the public know about different wood products.

The EPD pointed out that since the fifth wave of the epidemic has eased, the park has resumed guided tours. There are 3 tours per week, each with a quota of 15 people. The activities are very popular with the public. This month (August) guided tour The group section is full.

Y·PARK originated from a large number of fallen trees after the super typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong in 2018.

At that time, the Government set up a temporary garden waste recycling site to recover and recycle the fallen tree waste and other general garden waste, such as festival plants, potted plants, short trees, shrubs, branches and twigs.

In order to expand the scale of recycling and the types of recycled products, it was decided to develop the garden waste recycling center Y·PARK [Forest District] to provide the industry with a stable supply of wood in the long run.

Y·PARK was officially put into operation on June 29, 2021.

The park now has a number of facilities such as a recycled product production area, a recycled product storage and distribution area, a resource center, a woodworking classroom, an upcycled product display area, and an outdoor recreation area.

Currently, about 30 tons of garden waste is processed every day, and 70% of it comes from government departments

The EPD pointed out that over the past few years, Hong Kong has disposed of about 200 tonnes of garden waste every day on average, mainly from public works, routine plant maintenance and emergencies such as natural disasters and typhoons.

More than 70% of the garden waste received by the park comes from government departments. About 40% of the waste is young branches and leaves, 30% is branches, and 20% is sand and garbage.

As for the remaining 10%, it is the thick trunk with the highest plasticity, which can generally be regenerated into wooden boards and wooden squares.

According to the EPD, in the first year, the park will treat about 30 tons of garden waste every day, and it is hoped that it will gradually increase to about 60 tons per day in the future.

It takes 2 to 3 weeks for wood to air dry

Y·PARK is equipped with different processing equipment, such as wood crusher, wood cutting machine, drying and disinfection equipment, etc., which can convert suitable garden waste into different useful materials, such as wooden boards, wood cubes, wood chips and wood bran.

After the trees arrive in the park, they will be unloaded to the garden waste reception and storage area for simple classification, and then the suitable garden waste will be sent to the recycled product production area for crushing and cutting.

Finally, it is sent to the recycled product storage and distribution area for drying and planing or storage for interested users to pick up.

In the reclaimed product production area, the wood will be cut into planks and wooden cubes by an automatic wood-cutting machine.

The wood-cutting machine generally treats trees with a diameter of more than 300 mm. If the diameter exceeds 700 mm, additional treatment is required first.

As for branches and trees with a diameter of less than 300 mm, a wood crusher will be used to break the logs into wood pieces, which will be sorted by size through a screen.

Since the subsequent drying process may bend the wood, it will be "thick" when cutting, so that it can be flattened and made into a straight board.

After the masonry and cutting process, it will be dried with a hair dryer at 60 degrees Celsius, and then stored separately to prevent mildew.

The drying process takes 1 to 2 weeks, and it takes about 2 to 3 weeks from the wood to air drying.

Wood chips do not need to be dried and can be used in a few days.

Recycled into different products Trial wood chips used as garden mulch to prevent weed growth

After completing the above process, the logs will be made into wooden furniture, artworks and garden decorations; planks and wooden squares can also be used for wooden furniture, facility decoration and garden wooden railings.

As for the wood chips, it will be used as a mulch for planting, a leavening agent for composting, and can also be used as a raw material for biochar.

According to the Environmental Protection Department, the wood chip mulch is mainly used in the green leisure areas, roadside flower troughs and green areas in the park to effectively prevent the growth of weeds, reduce irrigation and avoid soil being trampled. The life span is about 9 months to 1 year, and then It will naturally decompose into soil nutrients.

The department pointed out that it is still in the trial period.

The wood in the product storage and distribution area in the park can be extracted from the outside.

If it involves government projects or organizes socially beneficial activities, the department will provide timber free of charge.

As for the local carpenter, you need to contact the contractor to buy it.

When building the Penny's Bay quarantine facility, Y·PARK tried to receive 200 metric tons of wood a day

Lai Junjie, Senior Environmental Protection Officer of the Environmental Protection Department, said that the overall design of Y·PARK reflects the recycling of waste resources. The office and resource center of the park were formerly the office of the contractor of the Tsang Tsui Columbarium in Tuen Mun.

He also said that the wood decoration and furnishings in the park are made from recycled wood, and "most of them are used."

The supply of wood panels is currently in short supply. It is hoped that the processing capacity will be increased in the future, and more wood panels will be produced to meet the demand.

Lai Junjie pointed out that most of the wood chips produced by the garden are about 5 to 10 tons per day, depending on the demand and the type of recycling.

He revealed that a few months ago, the authorities needed to build a quarantine facility in Penny's Bay, and the land formation project allowed the park to receive about 200 tonnes of timber in one day.

Lai Junjie, Senior Environmental Protection Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, said that the entire Y·PARK design reflects waste resources, which are recycled and reused.

Develop and introduce radio frequency identification system to identify valuable and precious trees

Regarding how to distinguish the recovered wood, Lai Junjie said that the tree species could not be accurately classified at this stage, but the authorities will introduce a radio frequency identification system (RFID) in the future to recognize the high-value and precious trees. If they are unfortunately cut off and sent to the park in the future, You can also learn about its species and where it is grown.

The Environmental Protection Agency is planning to set up a biochar (Biochar) test facility in the adjacent environmental protection park, which can generate synergistic benefits with Y-PARK [Forest • District].

Lai estimates that the facility can process about 6,000 metric tons of wood waste annually and produce 1,200 metric tons of biochar to find a way out for wood chips, such as building materials.

He said that last year, the garden team cooperated with local carpenters to design different sculptures with wood produced in the forest area. He believed that planks and wood cubes would be the way out in the future, and planned to promote them in upcycling.

Lai Junjie also said that there are already many mid-to-high-end reclaimed wood products in the exhibition room in the park, and he bluntly said that "citizens don't need to go abroad to buy."

When the fifth wave of the epidemic was severe earlier, Y-PARK held an online workshop to educate the public to make recycled products from different wastes. Lai Junjie described the reaction as "oversubscribed".

Since the epidemic has eased, Y-PARK has resumed guided tours in the park.

Lai Junjie pointed out that after the appointment was opened, "it was very sharp right away", and the public responded very well. They believed that the facility was popular with the public, and the kindergarten would also take the initiative to conduct promotional activities in schools.

3 guided tours per week can be reserved 5 to 30 days before the visit

There are 3 guided tours per week (every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday), each with a quota of 15 people, and each guided tour takes about 1.5 hours. Among them, the guided tour on Saturday will include a 1.5-hour workshop.

The activity is well received by the public, and the guided tours for this month (August) are fully booked.

The department reminds that visitors can make online reservations 5 to 30 days before their planned visit, and the online reservation system shares places with special applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition, all visitors are required to comply with current epidemic prevention regulations, including compliance with "vaccine passport" requirements.
