Coffee grounds are said to keep pests out of the garden.

But is that really true?

Experts advise it, but only if a prerequisite is met.

In the apartment, at the garden table or in the bed: many garden owners are already complaining about wasps.

They buzz around you, are annoying and like to get in touch with cakes, people and animals.

This bothers many because they are afraid of being bitten.

Most try to get the pests under control by scaring them away.

They will smack them, wave their hands around, or even run away from them.

But experts warn that this behavior only makes wasps aggressive.

With the result that they bite after all, which is particularly problematic for allergy sufferers.

But what to do about annoying guests when you want to enjoy a piece of cake on the balcony or terrace?

It should ideally be smoldering and produce a lot of smoke and smoke.

It's not poisonous, but it's enough to keep the wasps at bay.

How to proceed:

  • Put on gloves or use a thick cotton cloth.

  • Use a fireproof container, preferably metal.

  • Add one to two tablespoons of coffee powder or grounds.

  • Place the bowl outdoors (not indoors!) on a fireproof surface.

  • Make sure that children or animals cannot reach the container.

  • Make sure to place the bowl a few meters away from the garden table because of the smoke.

  • Take a match and light the heap of ground coffee in the middle.

  • Wait until it glows all the way through.

In addition, when positioning the container, it is advisable to pay attention to where the wind is coming from.

Otherwise, the smoke will blow in your direction, which can also be uncomfortable.

Good to know: As long as the ground coffee is smoldering, the natural home remedy against the wasps continues to work.

For two tablespoons, that's about one to two hours.

However, if you sit longer, you will have to add coffee powder or grounds and possibly light it again.
