The visit is likely to put a strain on relations between China and the United States: the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, apparently wants to travel to Taiwan after all.
According to the Reuters news agency, this is now also reported by the Taiwanese media after the broadcaster CNN.
According to local reports, the democrat will travel to the democratically governed island on Tuesday and stay overnight in the capital, Taipei.
However, the visit has still not been confirmed officially or by Pelosi himself.
