From August there will be a free reusable net for customers in all stores of the supermarket chains Rewe, Penny and nahkauf - while stocks last.
Cologne – A free offer is intended to declare war on fruit and vegetable purchases in plastic bags: from Monday, August 1st, the supermarket chains Rewe, Penny and nahkauf are giving away around 14 million reusable fresh food nets in all stores in Germany.
As long as stocks last, customers who buy loose fruit and vegetables will receive the reusable freshness net as a gift, said the Rewe Group, which owns the three supermarket chains.
For more sustainability: Rewe and Penny are giving away reusable nets
The campaign is intended to encourage consumers to use and reuse the more sustainable reusable nets instead of the usual plastic bags when shopping for fruit and vegetables.
Rewe has been offering reusable fresh food nets since October 2018, and Penny added the sustainable alternative to plastic knot bags to its range in 2019.
Now the customers should finally get a taste for the free offer.
“We know how difficult it is to develop new habits.
We therefore hope that this campaign will encourage our customers to continue using the reusable nets in everyday life.
Reuse is the best way to conserve resources," said Stephan Weist, Rewe's ultra-fresh division manager.
Rewe will do away with brochures in a year
At the end of July, another innovation at Rewe was announced, which is also intended to contribute to sustainability and environmental protection: The supermarket chain is the first food retailer in Germany to say goodbye to the printed leaflet - the weekly brochure about the respective offers of the supermarket.
The printing and distribution of the brochures is to be discontinued on July 1, 2023.
With this change, Rewe wants to save more than 73,000 tons of paper, 70,000 tons of CO₂, 1.1 million tons of water and 380 million kWh of energy per year.
