The threats from China are getting louder.

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry again warned the United States on Monday against a visit by US politician Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

Such a visit would be, literally, "blatant interference in China's internal affairs" and endanger peace and stability in the region.

Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs

"The People's Liberation Army will not stand idly by."

The speaker of the US House of Representatives has already started her trip to Asia: on Monday she met representatives of the local government in Singapore.

Pelosi officially wants to visit Malaysia, Japan and South Korea afterwards.

Taiwan is not on their publicly announced itinerary.

However, according to sources in Taiwan and the United States, Pelosi is definitely planning a visit, on Tuesday.

It would be the highest-ranking US visit to Taipei in decades - at a time when tensions between China and Taiwan are already heightened.

Taiwan considers itself independent.

China, on the other hand, claims Taiwan as its own.

Bernhard Zand, THE MIRROR

»We are standing on Xiao Kinmen Island, small Kinmen Island, which belongs to Taiwan (MAP) but is only 4 to 5 kilometers away from mainland China.

And that is one of the historically symbolic points for this huge conflict, which, with Pelosi's visit, is now back in the eyes of the world public.

It's a historic place, as you can see from these famous -- you know these pictures -- these famous spikes here, these defensive barriers here, against an amphibious landing that you feared.

And they are feared by the People's Republic of China.

The People's Republic of China can be seen from here with the naked eye.

The city of Xiamen is over there on the horizon.

In the 50s, 40s and 60s bloody battles took place here, with many dead,

above all with massive artillery fire, which went back and forth for 40 or 50 days at a time.

And that island, Kinmen, was practically half razed to the ground.

All this serves as a reminder of how difficult the relationship is between big China and small Taiwan, which is supported by the United States.

This is a front line, actually, of current world politics and, alongside the war in Ukraine, the war that many people, geopoliticians, geostrategists fear very much.«
