After the success of Emmanuel Macron's visit to Jeddah in December 2021, and the dinner at the Élysée on July 28, 2022 offered in honor of Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salman (MBS), we can say that a new partnership strategy was born between France and Saudi Arabia.
The Franco-Saudi relationship is old.
It had gained importance in June 1967, in the midst of the Arab-Israeli war, on the occasion of King Faysal's visit to General de Gaulle.
It had increased with the official trip (in Concorde), in January 1977, of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the first of a French president in the Arabian Peninsula.
Despite all expectations, it had continued to improve under François Mitterrand - the kingdom having even granted an exceptional loan to the French Republic in 1982 to avoid a collapse of the franc.
Presidents Chirac, Sarkozy and Hollande insisted on continuing this policy of friendship.
But the relationship had weakened a bit over the past few years…
