Cuts in classes, larger classes, canceled support hours - this scenario threatens from September.

School authorities are desperately looking for temporary workers.

The teachers' union BLLV is venting its anger.

Erding

– The school year has just ended, and the educators are already looking forward to the next one with concern.

A severe teacher shortage is emerging, particularly in elementary and junior high schools.

The two district chairmen of the Bavarian Teachers' Association (BLLV) are sounding the alarm.

"Set, six!" This is how Michael Oberhofer and Michael Braun comment on the planning of the Bavarian Ministry of Education.

They were "shocked and horrified," the two principals wrote in a press release.

Huge shortage of teachers: In Upper Bavaria alone there is a lack of between 800 and 1000 full-time positions

In Upper Bavaria alone, there will be a lack of between 800 and 1000 full-time positions in primary and secondary schools in the coming school year.

What does that mean in concrete terms for the district of Erding?

"In the school year 2022/23 we will certainly not see a fully qualified teacher in front of the class in many classes," predict the Isen rector Oberhofer and his counterpart from Wartenberg.

Many students were in a party mood on Friday, like here the fourth graders from Moosen with teacher Verena Kainz (pink dress).

Instead, student teachers would probably teach up to 20 hours a week from the first semester and “academics, regardless of their subject, would try their luck in teaching”.

In addition, it is to be expected that retirees and "in the broadest sense, people with previous educational knowledge" will stand in front of the classes and learning groups.

If such temporary workers can be recruited at all.

From the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, for example, it is known that the head of the school authority there asked for help from the schools in an e-mail.

Every educator should please get active and look for such temporary help.

The Erdinger school board director Robert Leiter was not able to comment on the subject on Friday.

Shortage of teachers in Bavaria: BLLV vents anger - "Complete misplanning of the Ministry of Culture"

The BLLV district chairmen describe this policy at the state level as "a sign of poverty and the result of a complete misplanning by the Ministry of Education".

The students didn't deserve that.

"We warned years ago, but the minister has repeatedly appeased and denied the shortage," complain the two passionate educators.

"In the annual report we give the ministry a straight six - simply insufficient, not even insufficient!", say Braun and Oberhofer.

By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Erding newsletter.

The victims of this development will be the children.

"If not enough teachers can be found, the poison list goes into the next round," the two teachers' unionists fear.

According to her, possible measures are:

  • Shorten lessons: The children have fewer lessons.

  • Increase middle school class sizes to 30.

  • No group divisions in works and figures.

  • Cancel support hours, shorten the German preliminary course.

  • Eliminate or expand sports groups.

"We're excited to see what's to come," Oberhofer and Braun annoyed.

They suspect "that the children from Ukraine are being used by the ministry as an argument for the shortage of teachers".

This is certainly a huge challenge that is being tackled with great commitment in the Erding district.

"But the blatant lack of itself in the area of elementary and secondary schools is well known, but has always been negated from above!", said the two district chairmen.

They don't see a quick fix.

In the long term, the only thing that will help is to make studying for elementary and middle school and the payment more attractive.

An adjustment of the teachers' salaries at elementary and middle schools to the high school level is an old demand here.
