The first Ukrainian grain ship left the port of Odessa on Monday after months of Russian blockade, thanks to an agreement backed by the international community that is expected to ease the growing global food crisis.

The Sierra Leone-flagged cargo ship Razoni, carrying 26,000 tons of maize, is headed for Lebanon, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry.

The ship is scheduled to arrive in Istanbul on Tuesday, where it will be inspected before being cleared to continue on its route, the ministry said.

The maize is destined for Lebanon, a small Middle Eastern country mired in what the World Bank has described as one of the world's worst economic crises in more than 150 years.

In 2020, it suffered a devastating explosion in the port of Beirut that destroyed grain silos in the area, a part of which collapsed after a fire that lasted for weeks.

"Today Ukraine, together with its partners, takes another step to prevent world hunger," said Alexander Kubrakov, the Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure.

"The unblocking of the ports will provide at least 1 billion dollars of foreign exchange earnings to the economy and an opportunity for the agricultural sector to plan for the coming year," the minister added.
