The United States killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of Al Qaeda, in an operation carried out last weekend in Afghanistan, as confirmed by a senior official of the Joe Biden Administration to the Associated Press and Reuters agencies.

"The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties," the source added.

US President Joe Biden will speak on television later this Monday, the White House reported, about this operation.

This announcement comes almost a year after the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, which allowed the Taliban to regain control of the country twenty years after they were overthrown.

Al-Zawahri assumed leadership of the group after the death of Osama bin Laden, and was one of the most wanted terrorists by the United States since September 11, 2001. US officials have assured that the attack was not carried out by the military, so everything indicates that it was a CIA thing, although agency sources refused to confirm that point immediately.

In mid-July, the United States announced that it had killed the leader of the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria, Maher al-Agal, during a drone attack, an operation that "significantly weakened the organization's ability" to prepare, finance and carry conduct operations in the region," a US military spokesman said.
