US President Joe Biden announced the killing of al-Qaeda terrorist leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a US raid in the Afghan capital, Kabul, last Saturday.
Agence France-Presse quoted Biden as saying in a televised speech today that "justice has been achieved and this terrorist has been eliminated," noting that US intelligence services located al-Zawahiri earlier this year.
Biden added: There were no civilian casualties during this operation, pointing out that Afghanistan will never again become a safe haven for terrorists, as he claimed.
And US media had reported earlier that the leader of Al-Qaeda had been killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan without US forces on the ground, in what the White House described as a "successful operation against an important target."
