RheinEnergie raises gas prices: the price per kilowatt hour doubles.
For an apartment in Cologne, almost 1,000 euros more are due each year.
Cologne – RheinEnergie customers have to be prepared for a hefty increase in gas prices.
From 1 October, RheinEnergie will increase the price per kilowatt hour of natural gas consumed from 7.87 cents to 18.30 cents.
This more than doubles the price.
The adjustment corresponds to an increase of 10.43 cents.
District heating is also becoming more expensive – by around 73 percent.
For customers in Cologne, this sometimes has a major impact.
24RHEIN gives an overview of the price increases for natural gas and district heating in Cologne.
Cologne: Gas price increases – by how much does the price increase?
Price per kilowatt hour so far | from October 1, 2022 | increase | |
---|---|---|---|
working price | 7.87 cents | 18.30 cents | 10.43 cents |
The base price for natural gas remains the same.
RheinEnergie defines a fixed amount as the basic price, which is "independent of consumption".
However, the so-called working price, i.e. the price that is due per kilowatt hour of natural gas consumed, increases.
RheinEnergie: Gas prices in Cologne are rising – what are the effects?
RheinEnergie calculates what effect the increase in gas prices will have on the people of Cologne:
Costs so far (in the year) | from October 1st (of the year) | increase | |
Apartment (10,000 kilowatt hours annual consumption) | 960 euros | 2002 euros | about 108 percent |
---|---|---|---|
Large apartment (15,000 kilowatt hours annual requirement) | 1353 euros | 2918 euros | about 116 percent |
small detached house (15,000 kilowatt hours annual requirement) | 1353 euros | 2918 euros | about 116 percent |
RheinEnergie: District heating in Cologne is becoming more expensive
While RheinEnergie customers still had to pay around 407 euros a year in a Cologne apartment in 2021, this amount will rise to around 705 euros in 2022.
A probable price adjustment on October 1 is already included in this number.
"This corresponds to an increase of around 73 percent," reports RheinEnergie.

RheinEnergie: Avoid additional payments
From the beginning of August, RheinEnergie customers will be informed about the new prices.
At the same time, the monthly deductions are adjusted to the annual accounts.
This is to avoid high additional payments.
And: "Tenants who settle their energy costs via the ancillary cost bill should also take precautions against higher additional payments," recommends RheinEnergie.
Gas is becoming more expensive: Procurement costs have risen
The reason for the price increase is "an almost 450 percent increase in the procurement costs for natural gas compared to the procurement period 2021/2022 to 2022/2023", announced Rheinenergie on August 1, 2022.
Prices are rising despite "a system of long-term continuous procurement".
The gas price has already increased significantly in 2021.
Empty gas storage met a significantly increased demand after the end of many corona measures.
This caused prices to rise on the market last year.
In 2022, the situation worsened significantly with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
Russia is the main supplier of natural gas and has massively reduced imports in recent months.
This has caused uncertainty and sometimes downright fear on the market.
Gas prices shot up again.
An easing of tension on the gas market is also not to be expected in the near future.
With gas prices soaring, some people are considering switching to electric heaters, but experts warn.
RheinEnergie: Gas prices in Cologne are rising extremely - and there is still no end in sight
Also because further state levies could lead to additional price increases in the coming months.
These two surcharges, decided by the federal government at the end of June, allow the wholesale companies to redistribute the additional costs incurred to the end customers.
“Both levies are being worked on by the federal government and should come into force on October 1st or November 1st.
These additional costs have not yet been taken into account in the prices listed above,” reports RheinEnergie.
This means that the price of gas could then rise again.
According to RheinEnergie, the additional costs are due to the fact that the suppliers now have to "buy the missing Russian gas supplies at high cost on the world market".
