A landslide occurred around 5.30 pm on the Matterhorn.

The Valle d'Aosta mountain rescue intervened by helicopter to verify that no people were involved.

The collapse of stones occurred from

the Lion's Head

(3,715 meters) and crossed the ascent line of the normal Italian ascent route, a route where the mountain guides - precisely due to the risk of detachments linked to drought -

suspended the ascents from 20 last July

.

The Sagf of Cervinia has also been alerted.

A consortium in the descent phase was further down and was not involved.

About 30 minutes before the collapse, the consortium had been seen with binoculars by the Financial Police of Cervinia, which after the detachment requested an inspection by helicopter.

The two mountaineers engaged in the descent told the helicopter rescue technicians that they had not seen other climbers behind them, but this report is being investigated.

It is possible that rescuers will go to the Capanna Carrel bivouac (3,830 meters) - where there are now mountaineers who intend to attack the summit tomorrow - to gather information about any other groups that may have been involved in the descent.
