It had already been decided that the Graßlfinger fire station, which was in need of renovation, should be rebuilt.

Because building prices are skyrocketing, the city council was able to vote again - with a surprising outcome.

Olching – Builders don't have it easy at the moment.

Calculation is a matter of luck.

The city of Olching is at least trying.

That's why they wanted to wait for the first orders for the Graßlfing fire station to be awarded and see how prices would develop in times of pandemic and war.

Now it is becoming apparent that everything is 20 percent more expensive.

The total budget has to be increased by 600,000 euros to 3.5 million euros (around two million were originally planned).

It needed approval from the city council.

Construction work, electrical and air conditioning technology as well as heating and sanitary work had already been advertised (no offer had yet been submitted for the latter).

Mayor Andreas Magg (SPD) said that this order package covered half of the expected costs.

The main committee was (almost) unanimous

The main committee, as a preliminary advisory body, had already given the green light with only one dissenting vote in the previous week.

Only Andreas Teichmann (FDP) had concerns about the financing.

8.5 million euros from land sales are planned.

"I don't know how only one million euros is supposed to come about."

But two groups made a U-turn after the yes in the main committee: Greens and Free Voters Olching (FWO).

In the case of the eco-party, this was not quite so surprising.

Green leader Ingrid Jaschke had previously indicated abdominal pain.

A cost increase to 3.5 million euros is "no small matter" given the financial situation.

In addition, one trade is missing, which is why the proportion is not at the 50 percent mentioned.

Jaschke applied to postpone the decision and wait for the result of the update of the fire brigade report (see box).

She stated that there was a consensus not to take any decisions until the master plan was in place.

That should be the case in September.

Surprising turnaround by the FWO

The new alliance partner in this matter was more surprising: the FWO, in whose ranks the chief commander of the Olchinger fire brigades, Josef Gigl, sits.

FWO parliamentary group leader Ewald Zachmann joined the Greens' request.

He demands equal treatment.

"One fire department needs the requirement plan as a basis, the other doesn't." In other words: Olching's fire department (planned 14 million euro budget for the new building) has to wait for the report, Graßlfing doesn't.

And only because the largest group wanted it that way.

That was an attack on the CSU.

The group leader, Tomas Bauer, replied that, to his knowledge, the report had no influence on the location.

"I don't know anything else." CSU fire department officer Lorenz Widmann confirmed this.

In addition, in order to change the project decision that has already been made, new points of view would have to emerge.

This is not the case either.

"We grudgingly acknowledge the price increase," says Bauer.

But he also pointed to an inflation rate of around eight percent.

Notes on the fire service report

Certain indications came from two factions regarding the fire brigade requirement plan, which the city is allowing to be updated.

This is intended to provide information on how the city's fire brigades need to be equipped.

After her group had applied for a postponement, Green City Councilor Marina Freudenstein made it clear: "We don't want to cancel the project." It's just about the decision to increase the financial sum.

There is also the possibility that the report contains internal shifts.

And that's where it got interesting: "Not that we get into the trouble of building a fifth fire station."

Olching's lead commander, Josef Gigl (FWO), who is collaborating on the report, only gave hints.

"I know the contents of the fire brigade requirement plan." He was vague: "I don't know how it is processed in your heads." Without saying anything specifically, he indirectly warned against nasty surprises from the report.

He only made it clear that there are basically four locations, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But he still had to think about how he would vote.

Mayor Andreas Magg (SPD) then made it clear that he considered parts of this speech to be highly problematic.

During the debate, it was repeatedly emphasized across factions that the basic structure of the Olchinger Wehren should be retained.

CSU parliamentary group leader Tomas Bauer gave well-known reasons: The proximity to the site serves to motivate and identify and thus attract members.

Every vote counted

Mayor Magg (SPD) confirmed: "18 percent hurts, but is not yet an amount to give up the project." He warned to hurry, since three to four months could make a big difference in price.

In addition, the fire brigade requirement plan would certainly not simply be approved, which would postpone the project again.

SPD parliamentary group spokesman Ralf Greim picked up the ball again: "In my opinion, the project approval was granted before we decided on the fire brigade report."

Every vote counted when it came to the resolution: it was accepted with a 15:11 vote.

The CSU and SPD were in favor of this (only fire brigade skeptic Karl Haschke was not), and Josef Gigl (FWO) was ultimately also on board.

The conversion of the fire station can thus begin.
