Remittances to Mexico grow again in June, according to figures from the central bank

By Reuters

Remittances to Mexico, one of the country's main sources of foreign currency, grew in June, driven both by a higher number of shipments and by an increase in the average amount of operations, according to figures released Monday by the central bank.

Capital received during the month totaled 5,153 million dollars, 15.6% more than in June of last year, linking 26 months of continuous growth, according to a monthly report from the Bank of Mexico.

The number of operations - coming mainly from the United States - increased in the period by 11.4% year-on-year to 12,636 million transactions, while the average amount per order grew by 3.8% to 408 dollars.

In accumulated figures, remittances increased by 16.6% year-on-year between January and June to 27,565 million dollars, said the Bank of Mexico.

President of Mexico orders expropriation of land for Mayan Train

By Reuters

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, issued a decree on Monday ordering the expropriation of 109 hectares of private land for the construction of section five of his emblematic Mayan Train railway, in the southeast of the country.

The expropriated land in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad and Tulum, in the state of Quintana Roo, will be occupied "immediately" by the Ministry of Agrarian Development.

The possession of the properties includes the buildings and installations in the area, added the text published in the Official Gazette on Monday afternoon.

"The interposition of any means of defense will not suspend the indicated occupation", mentions the text, which justifies the measure for reasons of "public utility".

It adds that the owners will be compensated according to the law.

At the end of July, the government announced in another decree that it would temporarily occupy private land in Quintana Roo to complete the train project.

The Constitution establishes that expropriations may be carried out for reasons of "public utility" and that the Government must offer compensation.

The railways are considered a priority for national development.

In mid-July, LĂłpez Obrador said that the Mayan Train had been classified as a "national security" issue, a measure to face legal appeals from opponents who seek to stop the work for considering that it damages the environment, especially in section five.

Honduras Reports 'Historic' Seizure of Coca Leaf Bushes

By Reuters

Honduran authorities reported Monday the discovery of more than 1.6 million coca leaf bushes in the largest seizure of its kind in their fight to combat drug production.

“This is a historic seizure.

We have dealt a heavy blow to these criminal drug trafficking organizations,” said the spokesman for the Armed Forces, Lieutenant José Coello.

Officials in the Central American country told reporters that the bushes, used to make cocaine, were discovered after a three-day operation over the weekend.

They were located in 42 blocks in at least four plantations in mountainous areas of the coastal department of ColĂłn.

The action brings the total seizures so far this year to 2,625,015 bushes, well above the 424,900 bushes found by local authorities in 2020 and the 531,826 bushes found in 2021, according to law enforcement statistics.

“The entire defense and security structure of the government is working to prevent us from truly becoming a cocaine-producing country,” Deputy Defense Minister Colonel Elías Melgar said in a government statement.
