The Mexican Attorney General's Office reported Tuesday that it opened an investigation folder for alleged federal crimes against Enrique "P".

A source from the Prosecutor's Office, with access to the file, confirmed to CNN that it refers to former President Enrique Peña Nieto.

“Based on complaints filed by the tax authorities, an investigation folder for money laundering and illegal international transfers is being put together, all of which requires expert tax and tax reports, which have already been requested, while various essential evidence is obtained to the judicialization of the case ”, detailed the statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.

CNN has sought Peña Nieto's reaction but has not yet received an answer.

This investigation occurs after the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Mexico, Pablo Gómez Álvarez, asked the Attorney General's Office on July 7 to investigate the former president for possible operations with resources of illicit origin.

That same day, the former president published on his Twitter account that "I am certain that before the competent authorities I will be allowed to clarify any question about my assets and demonstrate its legality, within the legal procedures."
