Johann Macher died in Pusztavám at the age of 92.

The Geretsrieder always carried the land of his ancestors in his heart.

Geretsried/Pusztavám – After being expelled, he found a new home in Geretsried.

Nevertheless, Johann Macher was drawn back to the land of his ancestors after reunification.

The well-known and dedicated Pusztavámer recently died at the age of 92.

"He was born as the only child of farmers," Karl Raminger remembers his good and long-time friend.

“They raised him to be honest, diligent and love work.” At the age of 16 he lost his father, who was badly injured in World War II.

Now it was his turn to support the family.

With the state-ordered expulsion of the Hungarian-German population, Macher was expelled together with his mother and grandmother to East Germany in 1948, then a Soviet occupation zone.

There the young man worked in a carbon factory and studied chemistry.

In 1954 the family moved to their compatriots in Geretsried.

Hundreds of Pusztavámers with German roots fled there a few months before the end of the war.

Macher worked for the companies Franz Galvanotechnik, Dr.

Boehme and Rosner Lacke.

"At the same time, he continued to study," says Raminger.

He married his Maria, whom he already knew from Pusztavám, and built a house in the flower district.

From the mid-1970s, Macher also worked as a freelancer in cancer research at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

He was not only interested in research: the development of his new home in Geretsried was also important to him.

From 1960 to 1978 he was a member of the municipal and later the city council.

"The fact that the evangelical church was built in the city center is also thanks to his commitment," reports Raminger.

"In Pusztavám it was on the outskirts, and that shouldn't be the case in Geretsried." Macher also worked as a lector for the church for a long time.

Despite the expulsion, his connections to Pusztavám did not break off.

He actively supported the development of a friendship between Geretsried and his hometown.

Johann Macher was an honorary citizen of Székesfehérvár

After the fall of the Wall, he visited relatives in Hungary.

They were unemployed, and in 1991 Macher founded an electronic components company with them in Székesfehérvár.

“In the beginning there were three of them.

Today, more than 100 people are employed there,” says Raminger.

Macher has regained Hungarian citizenship for his commitment.

Like all other people of German origin who remained in Hungary after the war, this had been taken away from him in the course of the expulsion.

According to Raminger, the entrepreneur was also made an honorary citizen of Székesfehérvár.

Macher lived with his wife outside of Pusztavám surrounded by nature.

He supported the local German minority actively and financially - especially the brass band and the choir.

Traditional costume group of Germans from Hungary loses "esteemed member"

Until the death of his wife ten years ago, Macher often came to Geretsried to see friends and acquaintances again.

It goes without saying that he was a member of the traditional costume group of Germans from Hungary – ever since he arrived in Geretsried.

Joie de vivre, sociability and humanity would have distinguished him.

"We are losing a dedicated and valued member who will remain in our hearts," said Chairman Raminger of his friend, whom he often visited.
