About two years ago, Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, which is considered one of the biggest and most popular eSports games, announced two new competitive games to join its arsenal of games.

The first was given the code name "Project S" after which it was revealed to us that it was a Valorant game - a competitive title reminiscent of Counter Strike meets Overwatch.

The second game was a competitive beat game codenamed "Project L".

Its official name or date have not yet been revealed, but Riot states that the future title will feature characters from League of Legends and take place in the world of Ronterra.

Now the company releases a short update and reveals to us that the future game will be free, and what approach it will take regarding the micro-purchases.

The update was opened by Tom Cannon, senior developer of the game: "One of our goals is to remove any barrier that would prevent you from playing Project L. We want you to be able to play, no matter where you live, what your level of play is, or how much money you invest in the game. That's why I'm happy to announce that the game will be free."

Of course, like any free-to-play game, the game will offer micro-purchases, but when it comes to monetization, Tom noted that the game "enslaved the players' time and wallet."

All that Project L likely won't include "treasure chest" mechanics and gambling that players don't know what they'll get (I'm looking at you FIFA). This shouldn't come as a surprise to Riot players, who are used to the LOL or Valorant approach.

Project L's development team includes many veteran developers from the fighting game scene, who work closely with the fighting game community to ensure a competitive title that will attract veteran and new players alike.

After the huge success of LOL, it seems that Riot is interested in expanding their touch in the world of eSports in the fighting game scene as well.

This is reminiscent of Riot's move when it released Valorant, in order to try and give a fight to a game like Counter Strike, which has been dominating the shooting game scene for more than two decades.
