The axes of the workshop, which was held by the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Information today, focused on the role of the media in preparing materials related to population issues and sustainable development goals and defining the national commitments implemented based on the recommendations of the Nairobi International Conference on Population and Development.
A group of journalists representing public and private media will participate in the workshop, which is held in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund at the Sheraton Hotel in Damascus, where they will discuss over two days the mechanism of preparing written and photographed reports with a societal impact to build public opinion on the importance of reproductive rights for the individual, reducing maternal mortality and ending violence Gender-based empowerment of women and youth.
The head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Eng. Samar Al-Sibai, pointed out in a statement to journalists the role of the media in highlighting the commitments that Syria signed at the Nairobi summit and the goals that are being achieved as a partner in development and its ability to reach and influence different age groups in society.
The workshop, according to the Director of Developmental Media at the Ministry of Information, Ammar Ghazali, aims to build the capacity of media professionals and familiarize them with basic terms and themes related to family and population issues, pointing to the importance of keeping pace with the development of media and its new technologies, especially electronic media, through continuous training.
For his part, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Hamir Abdul-Mughni, noted the role of the media in motivating and advocating issues of population and development and shaping public opinion, pointing out that the Fund is working on a set of programs that support women, youth and the health field, in addition to humanitarian relief programs.
Media Psychologist at Damascus University, Dr. Majdi Al-Fares, indicated that cooperation with media professionals aims to reach a national strategy to familiarize public opinion with the commitments of the Nairobi Conference related to combating gender-based violence, family planning and the development of related laws, stressing the role of the media in community awareness and dissemination of culture about the importance of Population issues in coordination with the concerned authorities.
A number of journalists believed that the participatory workshops contribute to empowering them and informing them more about everything related to development issues to complete a media material with a positive impact that achieves a media message that affects the recipient. The development of their skills, especially related to social issues of residents and families.
It is noteworthy that the Nairobi International Conference on Population and Development was held in 2019, during which the focus was on empowering women, youth, persons with disabilities and displaced families to take their participatory role in development.
