Lower the room temperature in offices, offer more home offices, no hot water: the Bavarian state government has decided on energy-saving measures.

Munich – Due to the war in Ukraine and the resulting gas dispute with Russia, gas for heating could become scarce in winter.

Bavaria would probably hit it more dramatically than other federal states.

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has therefore warned several times of a "very cold winter".

Bavarian cities and municipalities have already decided on and implemented a number of energy measures, such as switching off facade lighting.

Now the state government is following suit.

Gas crisis: Bavaria decides energy-saving measures for authorities, ministries and Co.

The Free State of Bavaria has around 11,000 buildings and structures.

Of these, 9,000 are energy-related, according to the state government.

"Energy consumption for gas and electricity is around 1% of consumption in Bavaria." Certain measures are intended to reduce energy consumption, and ministries and authorities are particularly affected.

"We want to set a good example here," said Building Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU).

As the BR reports, Bernreiter did not initially give any precise details as to which buildings and locations the savings should take effect from when.

What is clear, however, is exactly what needs to happen in order to reduce energy consumption.

Employees of the state administration have to adapt to some changes in winter.

The state government's 5-point plan of action includes the following steps:

  • Lowering the room temperature in offices: In winter, the temperature there should be no more than 20 degrees.

Hallways and other areas can also get colder.

  • Operating times and settings of technical systems are checked.

Means: maintaining the heating systems, lowering the temperature at night and on weekends and checking working hours.

  • Exterior lights of buildings are switched off.

"In the same way, the interior lighting of traffic routes and corridors can be adjusted to the operating times." The hot water in the sanitary areas should also be switched off.

  • Employees should increasingly be able to work from home.

Business trips should be replaced by video conferences and if this is not possible, travelers should use bicycles or public transport.

  • Employees are trained with regard to energy consumption, for example how to ventilate properly in summer and winter.

Energy crisis: Bavaria receives criticism from BN for package of measures - "far too late"

The measures in the state administration should save up to 15 percent of the energy consumption.

"The supply situation is very dramatic," said Bernreiter after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The municipalities are recommended to take on the energy-saving measures on their own responsibility.

The Bund Naturschutz (BN) has sharply criticized the state government for its package.

The measures would fall "far too short" and would come "significantly too late".

“These measures could have been implemented months ago,” the BR quotes the Bavarian BN chairman Richard Mergner.

Industry, private households and, above all, local authorities must also contribute to saving energy.

"Prime Minister Markus Söder obviously does not dare to speak this uncomfortable truth."
