At least four people were killed in southwestern Iran in May in a crackdown on protests over the cost of living and a deadly building collapse, Amnesty International said in a report released on Wednesday.

"

The international community must hold the Iranian authorities accountable for the torrent of violence that their security forces have unleashed with impunity

" to quell protests against soaring food prices, which left Khuzestan in early May and won the neighboring province of Chahar Mahall-Bakhtiari, according to the NGO.

"Growing Militarization of Law Enforcement"

Amnesty, which specifies that it has in particular "

examined and analyzed numerous videos

", says that it has "

found that the Iranian security forces have shown total disregard for the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality

", with the use of shots and live ammunition.

During protests in late May in Abadan, Khuzestan, following a building collapse, security forces "

including firing pellet guns into the mourning crowd

", according to the report.

At least three people, Behrouz Eslami, Jamshid Mokhtar and Saadat Hadipour, were killed in Chahar Mahall-Bakhtiari province on the sidelines of protests between May 14 and May 17 and an MP also reported on May 15 the death of a unidentified person in Khuzestan, Amnesty said.

In a context of probable new demonstrations given the discontent of the population, "

the security forces will feel free to kill and injure the demonstrators if they are not held responsible for their actions

", warns the NGO, deploring "

the growing militarization of policing of rallies in recent years

” in Iran.

In the absence of possible recourse to national justice due to a "
