Government measures such as the nine-euro ticket and the fuel discount were able to dampen inflation in Germany.

According to experts, that could change in the fall.

Berlin - Inflation is still high - but without government measures such as the nine-euro ticket, it would have been even higher in recent weeks, according to a report.

As the

Bild

newspaper reported on Wednesday, economists at the German Economic Institute (IW) calculated that the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) without state intervention in June would have been around two percentage points above the actually determined level at 10.2 percent.

Inflation: the nine-euro ticket could lead to further increases in prices

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the HICP in June was 8.2 percent year-on-year and the year-on-year inflation rate was 7.6 percent.

In May, the inflation rate was still 7.9 percent.

The main reason for the high inflation is still the price increases for energy products.

Federal government measures such as fuel discounts and the nine-euro ticket were at least able to curb inflation.

But that could change in autumn when the measures expire and the costs of public transport are not covered.

The scientists warn that the nine-euro ticket in particular could then lead to further price increases.

"The transport companies and the railways assume that the state compensation does not cover their costs," quoted the

from the IW report.

"Together with rising energy prices, this could mean that not only ticket prices will rise significantly from September, but also inflation."

Inflation weakens the purchasing power of consumers

Inflation rates at the current level have never existed in reunified Germany.

In the old federal states there were similarly high values in the winter of 1973/1974.

At that time, mineral oil prices had risen sharply as a result of the first oil crisis.

Higher inflation rates reduce the purchasing power of consumers because they can then afford less for one euro.
