Despite this result, the Japanese video game juggernaut remains cautious about the risk of shortages.

Between April and June, Nintendo thus made a net profit of 119 billion yen (878.6 million euros), whose jump of 28% over one year is explained by the depreciation of the yen on the foreign exchange market, the band explained in a statement.

Its sales fell by 4.7% over one year to 307.5 billion yen (2.3 billion euros) during the same period, Nintendo stating that it had seen sales of its Switch console drop by 22.9%, mainly due to the global shortage of semiconductors and other components.

Its operating profit fell in the first quarter by 15% over one year, to 101.6 billion yen (750.1 million euros).

Nintendo stuck to its guidance it made last May for the full 2022/23 fiscal year, justifying its caution that "

production and logistics could be impacted by factors like parts supply hurdles. , including semiconductors, and the risks associated with Covid-19

”.

It thus still forecasts a net profit of 340 billion yen (2.5 billion euros) over the entire financial year, which would lead to a decline of nearly 29% over one year, and an operating profit of 500 billion yen, a decrease of 15.7% compared to 2021/2022.

A target of 21 million Switches sold

Nintendo still expects Switch sales to reach 21 million units in 2022/2023, after 23 million units in the previous financial year and a record 28.8 million in 2020/2021, when a large part of the world was confined.

But "

it will be very difficult for Nintendo to achieve this annual target

" because "

Switch shipments have dropped significantly

," noted Hideki Yasuda of Toyo Securities, interviewed by AFP ahead of the results.

The consoles are "

sold out in stores, there are not enough stocks

", which could hurt Nintendo's sales, he added.

Nintendo still forecasts a turnover of 1,600 billion yen (11.8 billion euros) in 2022/2023, a drop of 5.6% over one year.
