A Palestinian media outlet reported today (Wednesday) that the mediators' efforts to prevent an escalation in the Gaza Strip are beginning to succeed.

This, after it was reported yesterday that the Islamic Jihad is ignoring the talks of the mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the UN. On the other hand, a senior member of the terrorist organization, Khaled al-Batch, claimed that the military arm is still on alert.

According to the report in "Al-Quds", Palestinian sources said that Escalation in the Gaza Strip could have led to an explosion in the area, after the military operation in which the leader of the terrorist organization was arrested in Samaria. According to the sources, intensive talks were conducted from yesterday and into the night in an attempt to prevent the Strip from being dragged into a conflict.

Islamic Jihad answered the calls after ignoring the mediators' attempts to make contact since the senior's arrest.

It was also reported that Jihad demanded from the mediators to oblige Israel to stop the "aggression in the West Bank, and will not be able to stand by if it continues to kill and arrest activists."

Yesterday "Al-Quds" reported that the leadership of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip is ignoring the contacts' attempts to mediate in an attempt to prevent an escalation in the region, following the arrest of the movement's leader in Samaria, Bassem al-Saadi.

According to the report from Palestinian sources, the mediators and especially the Egyptian intelligence tried to talk on the phone with senior Jihad officials more than once, but he ignored the calls.

It was also reported in "Al-Quds" that the Islamic Jihad has not determined the way and the place of the response so far.

"The response will be from the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, all options are open," the news said.

The sources even added that now the missile units and other squads have entered high alert.

Bassem al-Saadi, the leader of the Islamic Jihad in Samaria, was arrested yesterday.

Al-Saadi, 62 years old, is one of the most prominent leaders of the movement, and throughout his life he served 15 years of imprisonment in an Israeli prison cumulatively for just his activities in the organization.

Two of his sons, Islamic Jihad terrorists, were killed in 2002 by IDF gunfire. His wife and four other sons also served time in an Israeli prison.
