The Twelfth Festival for People with Disabilities in As-Suwayda, which started its activities since the 30th of last July and will continue until the 11th of August, is an opportunity to highlight the energies and capabilities of this segment and the importance of supporting it and promoting social integration and economic empowerment.

The head of the administrative committee of the association’s branch, Nizar Shuja, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that the festival aims to highlight the latent energies of people with disabilities, show their ability to work and produce, direct them to self-reliance, draw the community’s attention to the role they play and enhance the concepts of volunteerism towards them.

Shuja added that the festival "includes a variety of handicrafts and arts, a book fair and an outlet for selling school bags, in addition to a variety of daily artistic, sports, social, literary, heritage, voluntary and educational activities, including for children."

In turn, the Secretary-General of the Sub-Council for the Affairs of Persons with Disabilities in Sweida, Basem Al-Shater, indicated that the festival represents one of the association’s annual activities aimed at emphasizing the role of this segment and its clear interaction with the activities of the community. Productive projects to encourage work and production.

SANA interviewed a number of festival participants, where Amani Al-Khatib, who helps her son with a disability to manufacture accessories, indicated that she was keen to display his production in the festival market to encourage him to work, while Samira Amer found in the festival an important station to help her dispose of her products from shawls and exchange experiences with others, while she showed sincerity Instinctively, she is happy to be with other people with disabilities and to support and support them to market her products, as her work is her only source of livelihood in these difficult economic conditions.

Volunteer Hadeel Radwan said, “I was keen to be with this group that carries love in all circumstances within a beautiful family atmosphere,” indicating that she discovered through the dialogue sessions and discussions held with them daily a set of important ideas they have.

Samia Abu Hassoun pointed out the role of the festival with the help of many productive people who are unable to open shops to introduce their works, while Amal Morshed, a visitor to the festival, explained that the works presented by people with disabilities are attractive, valued and reasonably priced.

It is noteworthy that the festival, which is titled “Made by My Hands”, was organized by the branch of the Syrian Association for the Physically Handicapped in cooperation with the Suwayda City Council.
