The Association of Veterinary Doctors in Israel announced today (Wednesday) a recall operation of rabies vaccines, which were sold to private veterinary clinics without warning that they must be used within a day only.

According to them, in recent days they have received many reports from private veterinary clinics and veterinarians about side effects among animals vaccinated against rabies.

At the same time as the recall operation, the Histadrut called for an emergency discussion of the veterinary situation in Israel, after accusing the authorities of being complacent in this area.

According to the announcement, those vaccines were marketed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, transferred to the local authorities and from there to the private veterinary clinics.

According to the Histadrut, the vials of the vaccine were bought in a concentrated manner without the manufacturer's instructions, according to which a maximum of ten doses of rabies vaccine, in each vial marketed, must be used within a day.

The Histadrut stated that it decided to make this announcement after, according to it, the Ministry of Agriculture refused to replace the 10 ml vials with a single 1 ml bottle.

"Why is it that when there is a suspicion of salmonella in human food, the Ministry of Health carries out recalls and calls on the public to be careful, while when it comes to animals, they keep their heads down and move on to the agenda calmly?" wondered Dr. Michael Ettinger, chairman of the Histadrut.

"At the Histadrut Veterinarians, we received many inquiries from authorized veterinarians, who asked for assistance in dealing with the replacement of 10 ml vials for single doses," claimed the Histadrut chairman.

It was also stated in the message that in recent days, private veterinary clinics and veterinarians employed by the local government have reported side effects in animals vaccinated against rabies, including weakness, apathy and itchy lesions on the skin of the vaccinated animal.

"The current serious incident is the tip of the iceberg of the regulatory and structural failures in the field of veterinary medicine in Israel," added Ettinger.

"There is still no settled definition in Israel for the question: what is a veterinary hospital, what can be called a veterinary center, what is the definition of a veterinary clinic and what are the clear procedures for treating animals? Today there is no basic separation between veterinary medicine in the community, and the other fields of veterinary medicine.

"In recent years, reforms have been promoted in Israel that are unsuccessful and not adapted to the status of veterinarians in the world and the status of the profession 'veterinarian' in Israel - is eroding. The fact is, despite the difficult admission conditions for academic studies, and the long and arduous course of study until receiving a degree: 'veterinarian', about 30% Abandoning the clinical professions in the first 5 years! This is a 'failed' certificate for the State of Israel."
