The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) reported this Tuesday that it opened an investigation against former President Enrique Peña Nieto for alleged federal crimes.
CNN has sought Peña Nieto's reaction, but has not yet received an answer.
The announcement by the Prosecutor's Office comes after the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit of Mexico, Pablo Gómez, asked the FGR on July 7 to investigate the former president for possible operations with resources of illicit origin.
Peña Nieto tweeted that same day that he trusted that the authorities would allow him to demonstrate "any questioning" about his assets.
