The United States imposed sanctions yesterday (Tuesday) on Alina Kabaeva, who is reportedly the mistress of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This is in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Kavieva, 39, was blacklisted by the United States Treasury Department.
Following the sanctions of the Ministry of Finance, its assets in the United States, if any, will be frozen, and American citizens will be prohibited from doing business with it.
The move came a little more than three months after the White House said that Kabaeva, who used to be a famous artistic gymnast, and no one in Putin's inner circle, were safe from the sanctions.
This despite the fact that it was removed at the last minute from a similar round of sanctions.
British officials in May imposed similar sanctions on Kabaeva, who is now the chairman of Russia's New Media, the country's largest private media company. Western countries imposed economic sanctions on Putin's associates and associates following his decision to invade Ukraine in February. The United States avoided confrontation. direct with Russia over the invasion, even though it provided Kiev with billions of dollars in arms and other resources.
The Kremlin has long denied that the divorced Putin has a romantic relationship with Kabaeva, but various reports published in recent years have suggested that she is the mother of at least several of his children.
A Moscow newspaper, which in 2008 reported on an affair between the two while Putin was still married, was closed soon after for unclear reasons.
Kabaeva, born in Uzbekistan, won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Later, she served for more than six years as a legislator in the ruling United Russia party before taking over the New Media group in 2014.
Her previous experience in the industry consisted of hosting a television talk show.
