2022-08-03T10:59:30.772Z

During work that a team of the Electric Company had near the power plant in Hadera, they located the trapped turtle • After removing it from the water, they called an inspector from the Nature and Parks Authority, who transferred it to the sea turtle rescue center • "We hope that it will not develop an infection due to the entanglement in plastic"

A sea turtle wrapped around waste that was thrown into the sea was rescued yesterday (Tuesday) by a team of divers, who transferred it to medical treatment.

The team members from the sea department of the electric company noticed the turtle while they were working near the dock at the Orot Rabin power plant in Hadera.

One of them jumped into the sea and took out the turtle.

The team called the inspector of the marine unit at the Nature and Parks Authority who came to pick up the turtle and transferred it to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center of the Nature and Parks Authority in Sammurut, where the electric company is a partner.

Received fluids and antibiotics.

Guy Abgi, chief caregiver at the rescue center, said that "it is a young green sea turtle that arrived at the rescue center injured. We examined it and gave it initial treatment that included antibiotics and fluids. I hope it does not develop an infection as a result of entanglement in plastic."

The Nature and Parks Authority added that "many people who find the young sea turtles feel their distress and rush to untie them from the waste and even release them back to the sea, but it is important to know that untying the waste is in fact likened to untying an arterial blockage, as this causes the release of lymph fluid, toxins and pathogens (factors morbidity) to the turtle's blood circulation, and these may cause a systemic infection that, without medical intervention, usually ends in death."

In such cases, one should not release the waste from the turtle - but contact the RTG. The rescued sea turtle, photo: Guy Avgi - Nature and Parks Authority

Bartag clarified that in such a case, one should not try to free the turtle from the bag and its strings, but report it and transfer it to the medical care of professionals when it is attached to the waste as it was found, even if it appears to be healthy.

The Authority also stated that during the years 1999-2020, about 150 "turtles in a bag", dead and alive", were recorded, while in 2020 such turtles made up half of all the turtles treated at the rescue center. They wanted to point out that the turtles undergo medical treatment at the rescue center, where they remain for observation At the end of this period, if the rehabilitation process goes well, they are released back into the wild after about two and a half months - often without one of their boots.
