Watches deserve a world day

2022-08-03T20:29:45.975Z

When bicycles, fries or beards are given a world day, timepieces still do not have one. An oversight to be repaired urgently!

What if we gave time to time?

After all, since their invention, whether they were pocket-sized or worn on the wrist, or even in the pommel of a hunting dagger in the time of François 1er, watches have accompanied humanity's every step for centuries.

By marking every hour, every minute, then every second once added a third hand.

Since Breguet's tourbillon, many complications have come to spice things up to satisfy aesthetes of time and watchmakers' thirst for precision.

The minute repeaters and other grand chimes are just as much a work of art as they are an indication of the time.

But we don't pay the homage they deserve to watches.

Surprisingly, there is currently no World Watch Day, no World Watch Day!

God knows, however, if hundreds of days of all kinds, many of which are eccentric or purely commercial, rub shoulders on our agenda.

And you've never heard of most of them.

Day of the beard, beer, cat, Belgian fries, and even procrastination… The site which patiently lists them all has everything of a Prévert-style inventory.

But watches, nay!

However, our faithful daily companion would have many reasons to be honored in this way, and even at the highest level, that of UNESCO and the UN.

After all, this one pays homage to February 13 on the radio and June 3 on the bike: and why not watches?

The reasons for creating such a day are not lacking: when the UN General Assembly pays tribute to the bicycle, it salutes in the resolution aiming to create World Bicycle Day "the unique longevity and versatility of the bicycle, used since two centuries, simple, affordable, and environmentally sustainable.

We could say exactly the same thing, almost word for word of a watch, produced, purchased, worn, offered, by the millions each year, from the most affordable to the most expensive.

Useful, versatile, versatile, durable… It meets everyone's expectations and desires, from the simple act of telling the time in style to the most extreme movements.

It works for decades without ever stopping, crossing the centuries passing from hand to hand, or rather from wrist to wrist,

gradually metamorphosing into an irreplaceable family memory.

Finally, how can we pass by the jobs that watchmaking creates not only within the homeland of Swiss Made, but also throughout the world: designers, assemblers, watchmakers, salespeople, salespeople… The influence of this small object , whether mechanical and Swiss or Japanese or American and connected, on the health of the economy is simply enormous.

One question remains: even if it means paying homage to watches, when should you do it?

The answer makes sense: October 10.

Indeed, all the pieces on sale in the boutique are always presented with their hands set to 10:10 in order to present the elements of the dial as harmoniously as possible.

A presentation that has been nicknamed the watchmaker's smile.

What if, on October 10, for World Watch Day, we finally give our watch the homage it deserves?
