Brazil shaken by a surge in feminicides

DECRYPTION - In the largest country in Latin America, a woman is murdered on average every seven hours, most often by her spouse. The UN is sounding the alarm.

In December 1992, the brutal murder of the young actress Daniella Perez, killed by twenty stab wounds, had aroused immense emotion in Brazil.

The assassin was another actor, his partner in a telenovela, one of those very popular sentimental soap operas.

The motive was particularly futile: he confessed at the time to having felt despised, jealous of playing a less prominent role than his partner.

This case, which had led to a tightening of the legislation, returned to the news thanks to a documentary broadcast these days on a streaming platform.

It illustrates a scourge which, nearly thirty years later, is still at its highest in the largest country in Latin America.

Thus, in the Rio region alone, five feminicides were counted in barely two weeks, from July 11 to 26.

All these women were victims of their loved ones.
