Kansas surprised both Republicans and Democrats by voting overwhelmingly on Tuesday to uphold the right to abortion in the state Constitution.
In a referendum that proposed removing this constitutional guarantee, 59% of voters in this conservative Midwestern state rejected such a change, saying they wanted to keep access to abortion, compared to 41% who favored its abolition.
Had this constitutional guarantee been removed, it would have allowed the Republican-controlled Kansas legislature to tighten restrictions or ban abortion altogether, as neighboring states of Missouri and Oklahoma have done. .
Against all expectation, the opposite happened.
