Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan as a crazy act, stressing that his country will take the necessary measures to protect its interests in accordance with international conventions.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Cambodia, Wang said, "Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is a crazy, irresponsible and highly irrational act on the part of the United States."
He pointed out that China has made every diplomatic effort to avoid the crisis, but it will never allow its core interests to be harmed, stressing that the current and future Chinese measures are necessary and counter-defensive measures aimed at protecting national sovereignty and security in line with international and domestic law.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed yesterday that the countermeasures it will take in response to Pelosi's provocative visit to Taiwan will be firm, strong and effective, and the US side and the separatist forces in Taiwan will bear all the consequences of this visit.
