The JUPAS university admissions rankings will be released next Wednesday (10th), and the University of Hong Kong announced today (3rd) that it has issued admission notices to 8 DSE candidates with special educational needs (SEN).

One of the candidates, Leung Tsz-lang, suffered from severe hearing loss since childhood. He worked hard during his studies and finally achieved the best 5 subjects with 23 points in the HKDSE.

In the new academic year, he will study for a Bachelor of Engineering (Engineering Science) at the University of Hong Kong, with the goal of becoming an audiologist and developing better hearing aids.

He encouraged other students with special needs, each of them has their own difficulties, but as long as they persevere, they will overcome them.

Severe hearing loss was detected at 10 months old, hoping to develop better hearing aids

Liang Zilang was diagnosed with severe hearing loss when he was 10 months old. He has been wearing hearing aids since he was 1 year old.

He said that he was assisted by an audiologist during his growing up and improved communication after wearing a hearing aid, so he set a goal of becoming an audiologist when he was in Secondary 6. He hoped to become an audiologist and use his own experience to help people with the same hearing impairment.

He also pointed out that he has always liked the learning environment of HKU, so he listed HKU as the preferred course for JUPAS.

After receiving the admission notice, Liang Zilang said that he felt relieved and began to look forward to the university life in the next 4 years, hoping to meet new friends, enrich life experience, and explore other interests.

At the same time, he hopes to participate in research in different universities to lay a solid foundation for his goals, and plans to pursue a master's program in audiology in the future.

Convinced that as long as you persist, you will endure: you will be proud of yourself after enduring

Leung Tsz-lang mainly relies on hearing aids and mouth reading to understand other people's speech. In recent years, he encountered new coronary pneumonia. During the epidemic, everyone wore masks, which made it difficult to hear others clearly. In addition, he could not read mouth shapes, and sometimes he could not keep up with the learning progress.

Fortunately, the school provided sufficient support in middle school. For example, teachers deliberately switched to transparent masks, followed up on learning situations, and students helped each other. They also took the initiative to express their needs to those around them.

He also said that although he was a little worried about not being able to adapt to university life in the early stage, he believed that as long as he persisted, he could overcome all difficulties.

He sent a message to other students with special educational needs who also have their own difficulties. As long as they persevere, they will endure it. "Although it is a commonplace, you will be proud of yourself after you endure it."

Yang Liying, Director of Counseling and Psychological Cultivation at the Hong Kong University Student Development and Resource Centre, said that support plans will be tailored to the needs of students.

Lim Yushan will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science programme and hopes to develop in the study of ecology and biodiversity or biochemistry in the future.

She said that she is full of expectations for the future campus life, and wants to try living in a dormitory, "Shangzhuang (as a society secretary)", and participate in an exchange student program. She believes that she can solve difficulties and break through obstacles.

HKU to create tailor-made support programmes for SEN students

Yeung Lai-ying, Director of Counseling and Psychological Cultivation at the HKU Student Development and Resource Centre, said that the school welcomes the two students and will tailor support plans according to the needs of the students.

In recent years, the University of Hong Kong has about 300 registered students with special educational needs. The school will provide individual support, including adjustment of examination arrangements, provision of special learning software, classroom videos, fund support, etc.

She stressed that the University of Hong Kong will not lower the academic requirements for students with special educational needs, but will provide assistance according to their learning needs to reduce the impact of physical disabilities.
