More than 6.6 million people have been internally displaced in Ukraine due to the hostilities, the International Organization for Migration reported on Wednesday.

A survey conducted by the IOM last month showed that 15% of Ukraine's population has been displaced.

At the same time, 5.5 million previously displaced people have returned to their homes, most of them to the city and the Kyiv region, as well as to the Kharkiv, Odessa and Chernihiv regions.

The organization noted that many of the displaced face economic hardship.

According to the organization, 60% of people who were employed before the displacement have lost their jobs and up to 9% have no income since the outbreak of the large-scale war in late February.

With the colder months approaching, many are concerned about their living conditions, the IOM said.

As many as 44% said they needed help with repairs and more than a quarter feared having to leave their current accommodation due to insufficient heating before winter.

Russian officials say their air defense systems repelled another attempt by the Ukrainian military to attack the Antonovsky Bridge, a key structure that spans the Dnieper River into the occupied city of Kherson.

"There were no attacks on the bridge. There were attempts, but everything was repulsed by the air defense system. Nothing flew over the bridge, all this is false," said Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the region's civil military administration, to the Russian state news agency TASS.

Ukraine has been attacking bridges in the area for several weeks, hoping to cut off supplies to Russian troops in Kherson before an announced counteroffensive.

Traffic across the Antonovsky Bridge came to a complete stop on July 27, according to TASS.

Over the past week, Russian state media and social media footage has shown Moscow forces ferrying people across the Dnieper River on makeshift ferries, skirting the unused bridges.

Nearly 6,000 people trying to leave the Russian-occupied territories for the southeastern city of Zaporizhia have been stuck due to flooding along the route, according to Ukrainian authorities.

"There are more than 1,200 cars at the Vasylivka checkpoint, that is, almost 6,000 of our citizens waiting in line to leave for the city of Zaporizhia," the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, told Ukrainian television on Thursday. .

"The waiting time there is up to seven days. But the situation has become complicated in recent days, because it is raining a lot in the Zaporizhia region, and the dirt road, which is in the gray area, is now impassable." .

The route to Zaporizhia through Vasylivka is one of the few "green corridors", allowing civilians to escape from the Russian-occupied territories to safer parts of the country, controlled by Ukraine.

The road has been flooded for the last few days.

"The enemy is deliberately blocking this road now, because he is deliberately freeing our citizens, who will then be stuck on this dirt road," Fedorov added.

"Therefore, evacuation is possible from today, but it is very painful and takes quite a long time."

On Wednesday, authorities said the number of Ukrainian refugees trying to travel on the road had increased due to Ukraine's counter-offensive towards the occupied city of Kherson.

Eastern Front Line:

Ukrainian authorities reported heavy shelling across most of the eastern battlefield.

Near Kharkiv, Russian forces tried to advance towards Bairak-Husarivka, the Ukrainian military said.

Russian forces largely abandoned Kharkiv as a target as they have focused on the Donbass regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, he added.

Fighting in the South:

Meanwhile, on Ukraine's southern flank, Russian forces relied primarily on artillery, shelling more than 25 settlements in and around Mykolaiv.

The city faced heavy shelling throughout the week, and a Ukrainian grain tycoon and his wife were killed in an attack last Saturday.

Residents of the city told CNN that it was the largest bombardment in the city since the beginning of the war.

Ukraine has attempted to mount a counteroffensive in this area, and Ukrainian officials have said Moscow is using artillery to defend and hold territory it controls.
