In the district building committee, climate protection manager Veronika Böhm explains how far the district has come in terms of sustainability in recent years.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – The district has invested a lot of money in its schools in recent years.

One of the goals was to make the heat and power supply as sustainable as possible, to rely on renewable energy sources and to reduce CO2 emissions.

In an interim report, climate protection manager Veronika Böhm explained to the district building committee on Monday how far they have come on this path.

CO2 emissions of all district properties have been reduced by 50 percent

There is definitely good news: Compared to 2008, the CO2 emissions of all district properties have been reduced by 50 percent.

In 2021, however, it rose again slightly compared to the previous year.

The pandemic is also responsible for this.

For one thing, the new ventilation units would consume quite a bit of electricity.

Schools that do not yet have a ventilation system often heat with the windows open at the same time.

In fact, more energy is consumed overall than in 2008 – the bottom line is five percent.

In the area of heat, the plus is three percent, in the case of electricity it is 15 percent.

Overall, the district's energy costs have risen by seven percent since 2008.

Overall, energy consumption has increased - why is that?

Karl Murböck (CSU) was surprised.

"We have an increase in overall consumption, although we have invested a lot of money in the renovation of the schools.

Why is that?” he wanted to know.

Böhm cited digitization as the reason.

“A lot of devices are now being used.

Where there used to be blackboards, there are now whiteboards.” There are also numerous teachers' and students' laptops and tablets.

Murböck accepted this explanation for the electricity, "but with the heat..." Here one should not forget that the number of students has increased and areas have been added, said the head of the main office, René Beysel.

And: Of course, a lot has been renovated, "but we probably haven't even reached 50 percent of our building status".

District relies on wood chips and district heating instead of gas

In any case, the district has significantly reduced the gas share in heat generation in recent years – by a full 62 percent.

Instead, he now relies on wood chips and district heating.

The proportion of renewable energies in heat generation is 67 percent - assuming that the heat drawn from the long-distance network is obtained entirely using renewable energies.

"I would like to break this down in more detail in the next report," said Böhm.

Electricity comes 100 percent from renewable sources

In any case, 100 percent of the electricity consumed comes from renewable sources.

There are already one or more photovoltaic systems on many school roofs and the district office, and more will follow.

The last focus here was on the planned system on the roof of the triple hall of the Geretsried school center.

In June, the construction committee had actually postponed the tender in view of the overheated market and the explosion in costs.

“But the call for tenders will go out this week or next.

With a view to the forecast electricity prices, we decided to do so," said Beysel when asked by Jakob Koch (Greens).

However, the results of the tender will have to show whether it will immediately be the large variant decided by the committee or whether an expansion option will be kept open for later.

Nikolaus Mair (Greens) definitely saw the district as “on the right track.

A lot has happened.

Thanks to the main office".

But he also saw further potential.

“There is still no PV system at the Tölz high school.

Is there something planned?” In the coming year, Beysel answered.

Bernhard Simon (CSU) was still nibbling on the increased energy consumption.

Many of the measures implemented were actually intended to save energy.

“Perhaps it is due to incorrect user behavior.

You could check that again.” A decision was not necessary.

The committee took note of the comments.
