The Ministry of Local Administration and Environment issued Resolution No. 1451 for the year 2022, according to which the electoral districts in the provincial councils, the cities of provincial centers and cities with a population of more than one hundred thousand people were determined.
According to the first article of the decision, of which SANA received a copy, the number of electoral constituencies in Damascus governorate reached “5” constituencies, “11” in Rif Dimashq governorate, “11” in Aleppo governorate, “25” constituencies in Homs governorate and “9” in Homs governorate. Hama governorate, “7” in Idlib governorate, “5” districts in Lattakia, “7” in Tartous, “3” in Deir ez-Zor, “6” in Al-Hasakah, while “4” districts were allocated to Raqqa governorate, “6” to Daraa governorate, and “6” to Daraa governorate. “4” for As-Suwayda and one in Quneitra Governorate.
In its second article, the decision specified the electoral districts for governorate centers and cities divided into districts for “cities with a population of more than one hundred thousand people” in the course of electing their local council. Accordingly, “5” electoral districts were identified in Aleppo governorate and one electoral district in the rest of the administrative units not mentioned In the second article of the decision.
In a statement to SANA reporter, Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Environment Moataz Qattan announced the approval of creating “26” new administrative units that were not previously updated, and “24” municipalities and two towns in which elections will be held for the first time, explaining that “52” administrative units that were in the previous session were municipalities that became towns. Currently, its population exceeds ten thousand people, and that two towns have become cities, as their population exceeds fifty thousand people.
Kattan indicated that the current electoral councils began their work as councils on 10-2-2018, and according to the local administration law, the term of the councils' term is four years and ends on the same date of this year.
The ministry also issued Resolution No. 1450 for the year 2022, according to which it determined the percentage of representation of the workers and farmers sector and the sectors of the rest of the people in the elections for members of local councils in governorates, cities, towns and municipalities.
According to the decision, “50” percent was specified for the workers and farmers sector and “50” percent for the sectors of the rest of the people. This percentage is not required when distributing the seats of the two sectors in the same electoral district.
