"It was a second, I felt heat throughout my body and it was like I was burning," says José Campos. The rays have a temperature of 50,000 degrees, five times hotter than the sun. There is a one in 15,300 chance of being hit, but it can increase if you do this.

José Campos was working outdoors three years ago when he received a powerful electric shock that left him unconscious.

But it was not the first time that he had this experience: in his native Honduras he had already suffered the impact of lightning as a child.

"God sometimes has a purpose for each person in life," he explained in an interview with Noticias Telemundo.

He was struck by an electrical discharge from lightning in April 2018 when he was working in New York.

“It was a second.

I felt heat all over my body and

I felt like I was burning”

, he recounted, “I lost consciousness there, I don't remember anymore”.

Campos left the hospital in a wheelchair, but the medical report was better than he imagined: he did not suffer serious burns to his organs, although his nerves were damaged.

Lightning strikes claim more than 20 lives in the United States each year and injure hundreds of others, according to the National Weather Service.

In California a woman and her dogs recently died while walking after being struck by lightning.

The high temperatures do not give respite.

"The lightning has a temperature of about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit," said Robert Molleda, an expert with the National Weather Service, "five times hotter than the surface of the sun."

Molleda denied the idea that cell phones, jewelry or any other small metal accessory can attract lightning, although metal or water "are good conductors of electricity."

“If you are touching a metal fence and lightning strikes 100 meters away but it falls on that fence, it will drive and travel from where the lightning struck to where the person is,” he warned.

There are several ways to protect yourself.

If you are outdoors and hear thunder:

  • Head towards a locked building.

  • Stay away from windows and avoid using electronic equipment.

  • If there is no shelter nearby, get in the car.

  • Never take cover under an isolated tree or lie on the ground in an open area.

  • Stay away from rivers, lakes or the sea, and from elevated areas.

  • “If you are at home,

this is not the time to talk on the landline or take a shower,

wash your hands or do the dishes,” said Erika Benítez, a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Fire Department.

José Campos is clear that one does not play with nature.

    “I am afraid of lightning,

they make me nervous,” he assured.

But with his testimony he hopes to raise awareness about his danger: "I have been very lucky that this has happened to me and it has not taken me further."

Rains and fires continue to hit Kentucky and northern California

According to the National Weather Service, the odds of a person being struck by lightning are 1 in 15,300, and there is a 90% chance of survival, albeit with lasting consequences.

The state of Florida is considered the lightning capital because it is where they strike the most, followed by Louisiana and Texas.
