The runners Magdalena Kalus and Susann Lehmann collect money for the Bund Naturschutz as part of the Eiger Ultratrail.

They have reached their limits because of the heat.

Walchensee/Kochel am See

– 176 kilometers and 12,360 meters in altitude in three days.

Magdalena Kalus (36) from Walchensee and Susann Lehmann (36) from Kochel am See present this impressive balance sheet.

As reported, the two want to collect 25,000 euros as part of the Eiger Ultratrail and donate it to the Bund Naturschutz.

In an interview with our newspaper, Magdalena Kalus tells us how the two of them fared on the Ultratrail in Switzerland in July.

"It started great.

We got off to a good start,” reports the 36-year-old, who works in human resources in Munich.

She and Lehmann, who works as a freelance social media manager and graphic designer, have been running trails for a long time.

The women had been training for the run for months.

“We ran the first half of the day in the shadow of the north face of the Eiger.

It was already clear to us that it was going to be very hot,” says Kalus.

The high summer temperatures of up to 40 degrees were also the reason why the passionate runners didn't finish the ultra trail with a total of 250 kilometers and 20,000 meters of altitude difference.

"Susi didn't cope with the heat so well," Magdalena Kalus continues.

"She struggled through but could eat very little solid food."

However, in order to have enough energy for the following kilometers and meters of altitude, it would have been important to have enough food as an energy source.

"But Susi couldn't eat anything because of the heat.

For example, I ate two plates of pasta at the refreshment stations and filled up my energy reserves," says Kalus, who didn't bother the heat that much.

She got along fine, except for blisters on her feet.

The stations mentioned were set up every 20 to 30 kilometers, where you could take a break and eat something.

Because on the way the two had only light luggage and therefore little provisions with them.

"We had water, gels and bars in our backpacks," says Kalus.

“At the aid stations there was pasta, pizza or rice.

And you could rest.

Overall, we only slept three to five hours during the three days.”

In the end, each ascent became more and more strenuous, and then there was also the tiredness.

"On day three we said we'd get out.

It was definitely the more sensible decision.” But what motivated the two passionate runners to get this far?

"Of course you mentally prepare for a run like this," says Kalus.

"You got it in your head that you want to make it." The two of them were also motivated by the great landscape: "We had wonderful views of the Aletsch Glacier and the north face of the Eiger."

Maybe the runners will start again next year

Even if the passionate runners didn't complete the entire route, they are satisfied: "We ran more than a hundred miles.

All in all, it was a great experience.” Can you imagine taking part in a race of this magnitude again?

"Yes," says Kalus resolutely.

"We still have an outstanding bill." The thought is currently there.

"Maybe we'll do it again next year."

The two women give a review of the Ultratrail on their Instagram channels, where they reach over 120,000 people together.

And they connected the run to a good cause.

"Our goal is to donate 25,000 euros to the Bund Naturschutz.

To preserve the diversity of species and biodiversity in our local mountains,” the two explain.

In the mountains they recharge their batteries and find peace, and therefore want to give something back to them.

The donation pot is open until the end of August.

"We have currently collected between seven and eight thousand euros and are happy about every sum," says Kalus, who is active as a nature conservation ambassador for the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen ("nature conservation begins with you").

And Lehmann has already collected several thousand euros for charitable associations and organizations during his own fundraising runs.

It has not yet been finally decided what the money will be used for.

“A biotope merger near Neuschwanstein Castle is an option.

But we want to see where the federal government has a need for nature conservation.”
