Yang Enhua, who suffered from amblyopia due to congenital premature birth, has less than 10% of normal eyesight. In junior high school, he was arranged by relatives and friends to be sent to a special school to learn massage for the blind. He came to Hong Kong 8 years ago and lived with his parents in a 100-square-foot sub-unit in Sham Shui Po. Fortunately, erhu reshaped his life path. He studied hard, re-reading secondary three twice to adapt to mainstream education, and then successfully applied for the Academy of Performing Arts to focus on music. His erhu talent has also been discovered and turned into a talent. Ideal move forward.

"My relatives and friends in the Mainland told me to learn massage for the blind, and they told you to be realistic. You can learn a major that can work, but Hong Kong is different. As long as you work hard, you will have opportunities."

"You shouldn't be in the sun, just leave the chair and put your schoolbag." Yang Enhua, a 25-year-old visually impaired person, like other visually impaired people, often cannot see the obstacles in front of them or wants to designate specific objects, and needs the help of others. Therefore, polite words are often on the lips, but he has a different stubbornness towards music.

"At the graduation ceremony of the Renyi Academy of Performing Arts (completed masters), I first played "The Third Erhu Rhapsody", but I only played it in the performing arts exam, and I studied it for a year beforehand, so I remembered three or four notations for the rest of the school. In the month of June, I relied on the teacher to sing and record the music, and then I recited every sentence.” It was hard work for him, but he was happy, “At that time, the Erhu teacher asked me about the direction of the music department, and I said that I wanted to develop to the professional performance level. So do it without thinking about how difficult it is.”

Prematurely born with congenital amblyopia, relatives and friends have arranged to learn blind massage as technician

In fact, this kind of persistence is like an assist, turning his career plan into a 180-degree reversal.

Yang Enhua, who was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang in 1996, suffered from congenital retinal dysplasia due to premature birth. When he was 12 years old, he was enrolled in the sixth-grade class due to his vision loss, which caused cataracts. After recovering from surgery, he could only see fonts at a very close distance. His family arranged for him to study in a special school when he was in middle school, and then connected to a vocational training school in high school. "That is, he went to a massage school, 8 out of 10 classes taught you a massage, and when you came out, you were a blind massage master... Mainland relatives and friends are with me. Talking about going to learn massage for the blind, let you be realistic and learn a major that can work.”

At that time, in order to prevent him from getting too emotional after entering a special school, his family recommended a retired musical instrument teacher to teach him how to play the erhu. He accidentally discovered his potential talent. He won a bronze medal in a local international competition in just six months of study. Within two years He also obtained the National Grade 10 qualification, which is equivalent to the performance level of Hong Kong, and started his playing life.

A family of four rented a property in Sham Shui Po and met a musical instrument stall owner to change their life path

2014 became a turning point in his life. He came to Hong Kong with his father to settle down in March and reunited with his mother and younger brother, who was in the hardware business. At that time, the family was not rich, and the family of four could only rent a 100-square-foot apartment in Sham Shui Po. In the separate room, "there is no kitchen or bedroom, and the whole family has to put away the folding table and lay the ground floor." Enhua enrolled in Xinguang Home and School for the Blind, and in September of the same year, Enhua went to Secondary Three in Xinguang. During the boarding period, he practiced Cantonese, wrote traditional characters, learned to walk and other life skills. Knowing how to listen and speak, I resumed erhu practice a year later and set out on the road of music.

After coming to Hong Kong, the cultural differences between the two places made him suffer a lot. He re-readed Secondary Three twice and successfully moved from Xinguang to mainstream education in Minqiao Middle School.

But fate did not let him go. In 2017, his eyesight once again degraded to less than 10%. From being able to read words through a magnifying glass in the past, he could only see the shaking of light and shadow in front of his eyes, and all the glyphs became fuzzy pictographs. He didn't want to give up on it, "I didn't want to accept the reality and I didn't want to tell people about it. At that time, I participated in a musical at school, and I still went to the rehearsal. , relearn to walk with a cane and braille."

Waves of setbacks did not defeat him, but made him stronger. He scored 16 in the 2020 Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, but his English and Chinese literature scores were not up to expectations and he could not be admitted to the Music Department of the Academy of Performing Arts. He re-readed Secondary Six to make up for English, and he was successfully admitted the following year. He also studied with many teachers, including Peng Cheng, a performer from the Hong Kong Secondary School Troupe, and Yang Xue, a contemporary erhu performer and associate professor at the Central Conservatory of Music. The teaching method is different. Even if the basic skills such as scales have to be re-learned, it is like being abolished in martial arts, but he has not given up, "This road has not even been traveled by senior Xinguang. Mom persuaded me to turn back and become a lawyer, but I want to do it."

In recent years, he has won many awards and has been invited to perform erhu famous songs in the Mainland and abroad

After overcoming various difficulties, he has won numerous awards in recent years, and has had the opportunity to perform on the same stage with famous performers, including this year's award in the "VSA International Young Musicians Competition". He was recently invited to John F. Kennedy in Washington, USA. The Performing Arts Center will perform classic Erhu pieces, and in the Infinite Brightness Series 2022 "Huqin Gu Music Concert" Yang Enhua will collaborate with the famous composer Mei Guangzhao to play a number of erhu famous pieces. The performance will be performed online on September 16.

Playing started his second life, and he did not forget to thank Hong Kong for giving him the opportunity to be reborn.

"Hong Kong's thinking is very free for people with disabilities. 90% of the visually impaired people in the mainland are doing massage for the blind, but Hong Kong will not block it. (Blind people) can receive university education, and no one will object to learning music."

As long as Enhua concentrates on playing, even in a park with many people and noisy people, he can skillfully play "Under the Lion Rock", "The End of the World" and other music.

He lives in Sham Shui Po, and when he comes home from his dormitory, he will practice in Sham Shui Po Park, and he will play "Under the Lion Rock" whenever he wants, "Being in the same boat, we help each other under the Lion Rock. Contradictions in my heart, let’s go after the ideal together.” Although only the music is not sung in harmony, the lyrics come spontaneously in my heart.
