At least two people have died, eight have been rescued and five more remain missing after an incident off the Florida Keys.

The United States Coast Guard continues search and rescue operations for survivors after a boat believed to be involved in a human smuggling operation capsized off the Florida coast.

US Coast Guard Section Miami Commander Captain Jo-Ann F Burdian said during a press conference held at the base that at least one person is dead, and dozens more are missing.

At least two people died, eight were rescued and five more remain missing after a reported incident off the Florida Keys, the United States Coast Guard reported Friday on Twitter.

According to one of the posted messages, crews from multiple federal agencies responded to "several reports" of people in the water near the Lower Keys.

The Coast Guard indicated in another tweet that they had identified 15 people, of which 5 were still to be found.

No details were given about the type of incident recorded or the origin of the people involved.

The Coast Guard did not immediately return messages and calls made Friday by CNN seeking more information.

In recent months, the coasts of Florida have been the scene of several incidents involving migrants trying to reach the United States, many of them from Cuba and Haiti, according to the Coast Guard.
