Responsible bird protector suspects: animal probably torn by a dog.

At the same time, there are young talents in Markt Schwaben.

Markt Schwaben – A farmer found a dead stork in the Schwabener Moos market.

The regulatory office therefore informed Richard Straub from the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV).

Together with the district office, he now wants to file a complaint against the allegedly negligent dog owner and is looking for witnesses.

"There are currently no bears or wolves in the Schwabener Moos market," explains the stork expert.

Theoretically, a fox could also be considered as the culprit, but since the meadows are currently teeming with field mice, they would rather eat their fill there than mess with their big beaks, Straub believes.

Accordingly, only one dog remains as a stork tearer.

Stork expert asks dog owners for the leash

When Richard Straub came to the scene of the crime on Friday, he was very concerned that it could be a bird from the surrounding stork nests, such as in Siggenhofen, Forstinning or Markt Schwaben: "However, based on the ringing, it turned out that it was a bird migrating stork from Switzerland,” he reports.

His request to all dog owners is the voluntary leash, as long as Markt Schwaben does not change the mere recommendation to an obligation: “This year fawns and a pheasant have already been torn in the moss,” Straub lists.

He points out that even without hunting, the mere presence of a dog in meadows where there are rabbits and which act as breeding grounds for wild animals violates the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

In order to be able to clarify the death of the stork, Straub now hopes that a visitor to the forest has observed something and will contact the Markt Schwabener regulatory office with further information.

Storks have basic trust in people

Unfortunately, according to Straub, storks are often chased by dogs, but so far no dog has been successful in the Schwabener Moos market.

The danger would be that storks show a lot of basic trust, the expert explains: "They don't recognize people as enemies because most keep a reasonable distance and they don't feel threatened by it." their four-legged companions.

If a dog is not called back by its master and is after a stork, the bird's chances are slim.

On top of that, the stork's reaction time is relatively slow compared to other birds: "It always takes a little while before it gets airborne," says Straub.

Young bird spotted in Markt Schwaben

The LBV had good news to announce last Thursday: "After eight years, there is another young stork in the Schwabener Horst market." After a curious worker came too close to the stork's nest during the renovation of the Kindergarten Vorschule eV in 2014, the local one fled Pair of storks, says Straub.

Now he was finally able to register at least one young bird there.
