When the Bernried Veterans' and Soldiers' Association celebrates the 100th birthday of the war memorial on Sunday, August 7th, a name that many people around Lake Starnberg know will take center stage: Domenico del Fabbro.

The master builder from Udine/Friuli built numerous villas and farmhouses in the region, but also planned and erected the local war memorial.

Bernried

– Markus del Fabbro also lives in a house that his great-grandfather, who died in 1934, built.

He left his homeland because of numerous earthquakes and built a new life for himself in Bernried at the end of the 19th century - obviously with great success, as Markus del Fabbro knows.

Around 100 years ago, his great-grandfather had a company with 100 employees and its own siding.

He built villas and houses in Seeshaupt, Ambach, but of course also in Bernried itself: the villa on Karwendelstrasse still defines the area today.

He was also responsible for the construction of the first house far and wide with a basement.

Del Fabbro was also involved in the construction of the Hardt chapel, his name is immortalized on the pavement at the entrance, according to Markus del Fabbro, who is the 3rd mayor of the Bernried municipal council and is responsible for construction matters there.

Farms in Haunshofen and Bauerbach as well as Gut Unterholz also bear del Fabbro's signature.

His son and grandson were also building contractors, as was Markus del Fabbro, who is self-employed as a drywall contractor.

The Veterans Association is proud that a local built the memorial on the village street.

The trigger for the construction was the horrors of the First World War, because the club is older, it will celebrate its 150th birthday in two years, so it was founded during the reign of King Ludwig II.

It is the oldest club in the village.

170 festival participants expected for Sunday

For Sunday, the veterans expect 170 festival participants.

Neighboring clubs have announced themselves, as have local clubs, district administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß and patron and former mayor Josef Steigenberger, who is just recovering from a carriage accident.

The association itself, which sees itself as politically neutral, is committed to preserving war memorials and resting places for those who died.

It looks back on an eventful history: the founding flag could no longer be found after the Second World War and was only rediscovered more than half a century later: it was behind the back wall of the flag cabinet in St. Martin's Church.

About a decade ago, the war memorial was damaged by unknown persons: the rider's head was torn off, as were the horse's ears.

In the area of the war memorial, the perpetrators sprayed a stolen fire extinguisher.

Secretary Jochen Wolle recalls that the damage caused by the repairs was covered by the association and community.

Robert Schiebel is currently leading the association, which has 86 members (since November 2021).

His predecessors were Fritz Kraus, Josef Steiger and Josef Bürsch, who headed the association from 1965 to 1991.

In addition to laying wreaths on May 8th and on the day of national mourning, the association is active with annual excursions and an Advent celebration.
