Eight billion - The foreign podcast: Is the Taiwan conflict escalating into the next world crisis?

2022-08-05T19:43:16.256Z

China has responded to Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan with military maneuvers around the island nation, including within Taiwan's territorial waters. Is there a threat of armed conflict between world powers?

In 2027, China is said to be militarily ready to conquer Taiwan.

This is the result of analyzes by the US military that are no longer so secret.

After the escalations of the past week, armed conflicts between the two states could break out sooner.

Because after unsuccessful protests against Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, Beijing reacted with massive maneuvers around the island state.

The speaker of the US House of Representatives violated the applicable "One China Policy", in which the US acknowledges that only the People's Republic of China represents the Chinese people.

And not the "Republic of China," as Taiwan's official name is still known.

So, did the US break existing and commonly agreed law by not stopping the third highest-ranking female representative of the United States from flying to Taipei?

Is there an official strategy behind this?

Or will China seize the opportunity to gain a more advantageous position in the Indo-Pacific?

"It was above all the China and Taiwan experts in the US government who said: Careful, this might not be the best time to do this," says Christoph Giesen, SPIEGEL correspondent in China.

"So I think maybe it was a strategic move for Nancy Pelosi, but not a grand strategy to say, 'We're going to put our Speaker of the House in there now.'

This is something that, interestingly enough, is perceived more as a deliberate provocation in China.«

At the end of this week, China first imposed sanctions on Nancy Pelosi and her close family.

Shortly thereafter, the leadership in Beijing suspended official cooperation with the United States in the areas of climate protection and defense.

Indefinitely.

"It was interesting that among the Americans who had difficulties with the visit, it was above all the military," says Bernhard Zand, who, after many years as a correspondent in China, is now observing Chinese-American politics from New York.

»And apparently the American military have a somewhat more cautious perception than some politicians.

And since they're not known for cuddling really quickly, I would also say that's a reason to listen to it."

What did Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan do to the government in Beijing?

What role does Russia's war against Ukraine play in this context?

And how likely is a military conflict between China and the USA after this escalation?

Christoph Giesen and Bernhard Zand talk about this in this episode of the foreign podcast »Eight Billion«.
