In view of the Ukraine war, electricity prices and fears of gas shortages are rising.

This is how owners of gas heaters can equip themselves.

Berlin – Will gas flow from Russia to Germany again after the maintenance of Nord Stream 1?

And how far will the already high gas prices rise?

This question is currently occupying both companies and private households, and consumers are increasingly unsettled.

Against the background of the Ukraine war, sales of electric heaters rose by 25 percent between January and May, according to the Society for Consumer Research.

Many might even think about switching to a different type of heating or at least upgrading to newer technology,

But is it worth it?

As the consumer advice center explains on its website, modern heating technology is able to reduce household heating costs by up to 30 percent.

The reason: new heaters work more efficiently when set correctly.

This not only reduces fuel consumption, but also maintenance and repair costs.

The living rooms heat up more evenly.

In an interview with ntv.de

, Jürgen Leppig, CEO of the energy consultant association GIH, explains when the right time for a change is

: "When she's too old, that is, from around ten years of age."

Replacing gas heating: Which alternative makes sense?

He also points out that the federal government is considering introducing an exchange bonus for gas heaters as well.

Anyone who is currently replacing their oil heating system will receive a subsidy of 20 to 40 percent, depending on the type of new heating system.

According to the consumer center, anyone who replaces their oil heating system with a new, more efficient and climate-friendly system will receive an additional 10 percent.

Leppig recommends that anyone who wants to say goodbye to their gas heating system should use a local or district heating network.

“Anyone who does not have this option should consider installing a heat pump.

This is not always possible for various reasons such as noise, space or the building's heat requirements.

In most cases, however, a 'species-appropriate' heat pump will be the right solution,” explains the expert.

A hybrid solution that combines a heat pump with another heater for very cold winter days is also recommended.

The Federal Environment Agency also recommends hybrid heating systems.

"If it is not even possible to use fuel-free renewable energies in the household, you should plan to buy a more efficient boiler," write the experts on the website of the Federal Environment Agency.

How to optimize the existing gas heating

Even without renewing or replacing their own heating system, consumers have leeway to at least optimize the existing one without having to forgo energy saving measures.

You should make sure, for example, that the factory settings of the heating are adapted to the respective building.

“Unfortunately, that happens far too little,” criticizes Leppig.

Steps to optimize your own gas miserliness

Have the factory settings adapted to the building

Buy a high-efficiency pump

insulate pipes

Hydraulic balancing

Adapt the flow curve of the heating to the temperature

In addition, it should be clarified whether the heating system contains a high-efficiency pump.

“There are still many thermal heating circulating pumps that consume a lot of electricity: up to 90 instead of 8 to 10 watts.

A high-efficiency pump saves more in the warranty period than it costs.

This allows you to save up to 200 euros a year,” quotes

NTV

Leppig.

The insulation of the pipes also plays a role - cheap material from the hardware store helps here.

A hydraulic balance, during which valves may also have to be replaced, ensures "that only as much heat is brought into the room as is required to make it warm." Finally, he advises, as Robert Habeck (Greens ), for maintenance of the heating, in which the so-called advance curve of the heating is adjusted to the temperature.

However, fan heaters like many people are currently buying are only recommended for extreme emergencies, as they cause enormous costs.
