Patricia and Franco Cascio have been entertaining their guests in Schongau for more than 30 years, first at the "Allegro", and since 2007 at the "Garibaldi".

To the regret of many gourmets, the couple is now saying goodbye.

Schongau – Guests at the “Garibaldi” on Christophstraße will remember the specialties from Patrone Franco Cascio’s kitchen for a long time to come.

"We're stopping," landlady and wife Patricia had to tell her guests umpteen times in the past two months.

She can answer the question “why?” very briefly: It has simply become too much for the two of them, the days are too long.

Franco can no longer work - burnout.

And then she gets a little wistful and tells her story.

The two have been entertaining three generations of guests in Schongau for around 30 years.

In May 1992 they started in the passage towards Marienplatz.

Many beautiful days followed, also with companions like Franz Köpf.

And long nights in times when the open-air theaters "Hexe von Schongau" or the "Venezianer" were still performed in the old town - the passage was "completely black with all the people" in the evenings.

Because the "Allegro" eventually became too small, they moved to the former Rössle-Bräu in Christophstraße in February 2007, despite many reservations.

"The economy there was on the ground, it took three years until we really arrived," recalls the 56-year-old.

New rooms, new name.

Freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi, who is said to have fought his decisive battle in Franco's birthplace in 1860, was named after him.

The guests came to Schongau from afar, driving many kilometers for the fish and the famous sauces.

And of course the fresh pasta.

"There was a separate pan for each sauce and each pasta dish," says Patricia Cascio.

"The best restaurant in Schongau will be lost," Franco Cascio is certain.

He has compiled the best recipes for his kitchen from all the many chefs he has worked with before.

"I'm a gourmet," says the 63-year-old about himself.

Cooking has been his passion since he was a little boy.

"We did it with love," says the patron, who sits down briefly.

What the landlady does not like to be asked about is the beer garden - a huge area beautifully situated on the city wall.

"The beer garden experiment lingered behind us for a long time," she describes it.

It didn't work with self-service.

For two years, 2013/2014, they served there – 300 places.

They quickly found out: The kitchen doesn't provide that and the distances are too far.

It's just 50 steps from the kitchen to the bar on the city wall.

"You can do that in Sicily, but not in Bavarian weather." Patricia Cascio tells of the sudden chaos in a downpour, the guests crowded into the restaurant, at the bar or fled in all directions.

"We put so much effort into the beer garden, but apart from expenses there was nothing, the beer should have been sold as expensively as at the Oktoberfest." So the couple decided to concentrate only on the bar and terrace: "That's great works, we were fully booked every day".

Corona time not easy for a traditional restaurant - no discount on rent

The Corona period was not easy - despite government support.

But there were also months when no money flowed at all.

"And our talks with the landlords failed completely, they didn't even meet us for half a month's rent." Not opening again after Corona and sneaking away secretly was not an option either.

But in the end it was just too much.

"I'm a cleaning lady, waiter, accountant and ironer all in one," says the landlady.

100 hours a week sap your strength.

She still enjoyed saying goodbye to the guests.

"It was wonderful, especially the feedback for the food." Of course, she can't just wipe away 30 years, but finding a new job will certainly not be difficult for her.

Now you have to reorient yourself.

"But I'm versatile, and we have a lot of ideas, our guests aren't quite rid of us yet." And finally, there is also a second home in Sicily.

Franco Cascio: "One lifetime is not enough to implement all the plans."

In the course of a working life you experience a lot as an innkeeper, also in the Garibaldi when you stayed seated on a 3-course menu for 30 people: an alleged birthday party for a - already deceased - grandmother.
