Schindler becomes Käfer: the opening yesterday morning included (from left) Michael Käfer and Brigitte Irmer, who previously ran the delicatessen on Maximilianstraße for several decades, with the new branch manager Michael Oefler and his deputy Claudia Gilson.

After almost three months of renovation work, the new delicatessen opened on Maximilianstraße yesterday.

The Käfer group has moved into the home of Schindler Delicatessen.

Michael Käfer came to the big party in person.

Starnberg – Red and white balloons blow in the wind, waiters make their way through the crowd of curious guests with trays full of Prosecco glasses, frozen raspberries covered in chocolate are offered in front of the house and in the shop there is a buffet with small appetizers.

The opening of the newest branch of the Munich delicatessen chain Käfer on Thursday morning drew dozens of interested people to Maximilianstraße 1 in Starnberg.

“Starnberg is an interesting location.

The target clientele is there, but of course the business has to be accepted,” says delicatessen dealer and Oktoberfest host Michael Käfer.

“We are very fortunate, however, because the house was home to a deli shop several decades before us.

We hope that the branch will develop again as a meeting point for the citizens.

That is why we continue to offer a bistro with small dishes.”

300,000 euros for the renovation and refurbishment of the new Käfer shop on Maximilianstrasse

The concept has remained the same, but a few things have changed visually.

"We invested 300,000 euros in refurbishment and renovation work," says Marc Eckes, who is responsible for corporate development at Käfer and has lived in Berg for seven years.

He also brought him into contact with Brigitte Irmer, whose family had run the Schindler delicatessen since 1905.

"I used to go shopping here regularly," says Eckes.

"We kept talking to each other until Käfer made her an offer." At first, Irmer couldn't imagine giving up the family business in which she had worked for more than half a century.

However, since her son did not want to take over the shop, she decided to sell the business to the Käfer Group.

"It turned out really great"

says Irmer on the opening day.

"It was the right decision, even if it is an unusual feeling to now have so much free time."

Six of the Schindler employees were taken on.

A total of twelve employees work in the new delicatessen branch in Starnberg.

The range on the approximately 150 square meter area is a reduced version of the store on Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich.

In addition to fresh bread, various wines, champagne, caviar, cheese and chocolate are offered.

Only there is no fish.

"We have one of the best fish shops in Germany in Starnberg, so we don't want to be in competition there," says Eckes.

Opening hours of the new Käfer branch in Starnberg on Saturdays now until 4 p.m. - an important sign for the city

The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Saturdays, opening hours have been extended to 4 p.m.

"It's really great for the city.

We hope that other shops will follow suit," says Annette von Nordeck from the City Initiative.

"That would be really important for the citizens and would revitalize Maximilianstraße."
