Next to the Penzberger Volksfestplatz, the long-planned parking lot for holidaymakers traveling with camper vans will open on Monday.

The city expects demand to be high.

What mobile home drivers should be happy about: Parking is free for the first few days.

Penzberg - "We expect full capacity utilization," says Eleonore Hofmann, who is responsible for tourism in the city of Penzberg.

The need is definitely there.

Even when the mobile home parking space was still a construction site, the “social media” were talking about the new possibility.

Hofmann, who had previously looked at other RV parks in the area, also points out that new registrations of RVs have recently risen sharply.

In the spring - at that time the parking lot was still being worked on - she also cited a study by the Kempten University of Applied Sciences from 2021, according to which campers are people with high purchasing power who spend up to 50 euros per day or overnight stay.

Twelve parking spaces for motorhome vacationers - parking ticket machine only in mid-August

On Monday, the new mobile home parking lot for vacationers will open on the Berghalde between the Volksfestplatz and Stockschützen-Bahnen.

Then the location should also be found on the camper apps.

The location is ideal, near the center and in the Berghalde leisure area, says business developer Lisa Fischer.

Twelve parking spaces are available there.

The maximum parking time is 48 hours, explains Hofmann.

Travelers pay ten euros for 24 hours and 15 euros for 48 hours if they book this period right at the beginning.

What motorhome drivers will be happy about: Parking is free, at least for the first few days.

Because the parking ticket machine is still missing.

It is scheduled to be installed in mid-August.

The parking lot will only be closed during the folk festival.

Motorhome drivers have to pay for fresh water (10 liters for ten cents) and electricity (two kilowatts for one euro) right from the start.

Eight pitches are currently supplied with electricity.

A power column is to be erected for the other four.

There is also a pillar for the disposal of waste water at the new mobile home parking space.

A channel in the floor is also there so that travelers can drain the flushing water from their vehicles.

The former Sparkasse pavilion, which will serve as a public toilet in the future (we reported), is also to be set up behind the parking spaces.

But it still takes a while to rebuild it.

The city expects that the toilet pavilion will not be operational until next year.

“You have to go there and see if something is free”

It is not possible to reserve parking spaces, explains Hofmann.

“You have to drive there and see if something is free.” The city was able to keep the effort relatively low.

She has chosen a version without barrier and staff.

The area is only separated from the Volksfestplatz.

The city is still looking for a solution for the stick shooters, who have also been using the site as a parking lot so far.

According to Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU), the mobile home parking space cost 44,000 euros.

The municipal building yard put in around 400 hours of work.

Old camper place only existed for a year - end after complaints

In Penzberg there used to be a mobile home parking space: in the parking lot by the bathing lake at Gut Hub.

It was closed again in autumn 2020 after just one year.

At that time there were massive complaints because parking spaces for bathers were lost and the area was allegedly polluted.

The city of Penzberg then went in search of an alternative.

Above all, an area near the future family pool came into focus.

The site on Birkenstrasse, where the container crèche is currently located, was mentioned as a possible location.

This is still an issue, says Mayor Korpan.

When the new children's home on Nonnenwaldstraße is finished and the container crèche is closed, additional mobile home parking spaces could be created there.

Until then, you have gained experience.

"We're talking about 2024, more like 2025," says Korpan.

The parking spaces on the Berghalde would still exist, he explains.

"It would be disproportionate if you then rebuild them."
