China has suspended cooperation with the US on issues such as climate and defense.

Beijing will "suspend" exchanges with Washington on climate change and cancel a talk between military leaders and two security meetings, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced.

Beijing justified the measures with the "disregard" with which the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, met the "strong resistance of China" to her visit to Taiwan.

China and the USA, the two largest sources of CO₂ emissions worldwide, surprisingly presented a climate pact at the world climate summit in Glasgow last year.

In it, the two countries committed to increasing their climate protection efforts in the current decade and to discussing the fight against the climate crisis at regular meetings.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing also announced the suspension of cooperation with Washington on the repatriation of illegal immigrants, international crime fighting and the fight against drug trafficking.

The day before, after a visit by US Democrat Pelosi to Taiwan, China had begun military maneuvers off the coast of the island state, which extend up to 20 kilometers from the Taiwanese coast.

They should last until Sunday noon (local time).

The US and Australian foreign ministers had previously sharply criticized the Chinese military maneuvers off the coast of Taiwan that began on Thursday.

Sanctions against Pelosi and her family

On the second day of the maneuvers, a total of 68 Chinese fighter jets and 13 warships crossed the unofficial sea border between China and Taiwan, known as the center line, according to the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense.

Taipei condemned "the communist army that deliberately breached the center line," the defense ministry said in a statement.

Beijing also imposed sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family in response to her visit to Taiwan.

"Despite China's serious concerns and staunch opposition, Pelosi insisted on visiting Taiwan, seriously interfering in China's internal affairs, undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, trampling on the one-China policy, and safeguarding cross-strait peace and stability to threaten, "justified a spokesman for the move.

Pelosi rejected criticism of her visit even before the sanctions were announced.

"This visit isn't about me, it's about Taiwan." During her stop in Japan on Friday, she said China cannot isolate Taiwan by preventing Western officials from traveling there.
