Rush in the catering trade, no interest in construction - this is how it looks in the different industries with the demand for holiday jobs.

Large companies often want detailed applications by e-mail.

Erding

– Some use the holidays to relax, others to earn money.

But are there still the classic holiday jobs for pupils and students - and how do you get them?

We asked around.

Working where others go on (short) holidays: That is possible at Therme Erding.

It offers around 50 jobs in all areas, reports Managing Director Marcus Maier when asked.

In gastronomy, as a lifeguard, supervisory staff or service staff, there is a great deal of supply and demand.

However, there has been "no interest in construction for a number of years," says Rudolf Waxenberger, district master craftsman and owner of the Altenerding-based Anzinger construction company.

He offers up to two positions "for everything that arises on construction" - but the inquiries were missing.

The opposite is the case in gastronomy, many waiters.

But: "By the time we've properly trained someone, they'll be gone again," says Lukas Rieder from the Green Leaf Café in Erding.

Tobias Maier, part of the trio of village innkeepers, explains that it is only possible to step in as a “man for everything” for a short time at major events such as the Volksfest Dorfen.

For holiday jobs in general, but especially in gastronomy, age plays an important role.

You have to be at least 15 for most jobs (see box).

A holiday job at the upholstered furniture manufacturer Himolla in Taufkirchen used to be just as popular as working at the post office.

Little was possible without relationships back then.

According to sales manager Helmut Sperr, Himolla no longer hires holiday workers, certainly not for three years.

This is also related to Corona and the associated strict controls in the company.

And since August 1st there has been two weeks of company vacation anyway.

Summer vacation jobbers are an important support in the Prehistoric Museum in Taufkirchen.

There are currently five to six students who will be working there over the next few weeks.

You have to be at least 16 years old, and also “reliable and independent, because you are responsible for the cash register,” explains museum director Peter Kapustin.

Taking care of the museum shop and checking tickets are also part of the job, as well as cleaning the toilets.

Above all, you have to "be open and find the topic interesting," says Kapustin, who is currently no longer looking for cashiers, but is definitely looking for reinforcements for the pedagogical team, especially for tours - students are welcome.

The Employment Agency is a good contact.

However, regional companies rarely report classic holiday jobs for students, explains press spokeswoman Kathrin Stemberger on request.

If they do, they will be published on the website of the Federal Employment Agency.

There are different preferences for making contact: While calls and personal visits are best for smaller companies, an e-mail with a short cover letter and CV as well as a photo is desirable for large companies such as the thermal baths.

At the Dorfener Volksfest, too, the easiest way is to find out about vacancies on the website.

It is then important to "briefly introduce yourself" in an e-mail and to mention "position, information about gastronomy experience and on which days you can work", explains Tobias Maier.

As far as payment is concerned, "it depends a bit on performance, because if you are interested and hard-working, you will be paid adequately," says Waxenberger.

In general, the salary usually starts at the minimum wage of twelve euros and, according to Marcus Maier, goes up to 16 euros.

Tobias Maier follows a similar wage classification: "Payment always depends on diligence and commitment, as with permanent employees."

Stemberger motivates: "Punctuality, diligence, initiative, motivation, commitment - a holiday job is a good test for the future." Future training companies and employers would also see it that way.

"Holiday jobs are therefore a convincing recommendation in subsequent application documents."
